Box Score LaGrange pulled away in the second half to upend 12th-ranked Birmingham-Southern 90-68 at Mariotti Gym on Tuesday. The Panthers improved to 2-0, while the visiting Panthers slipped to 2-1.
"This game was a complete team effort for us," Head Coach Kendal Wallace said. "We had early foul trouble and our bench stepped up and played great."
Kyron Anderson, who did not play in the Panthers' opening win over Berry, led all scorers with 27 points. Anderson had 17 in the first half helping the Panthers to a 42-37 lead.
Nick Mitchell followed with 18 points on 6-of-10 shooting, including a perfect 3-for-3 from 3-point range. Marcus Vaughn added 11 and Dustin Baxter 10.
The Panthers front court of Vaughn and Patrick Dugger ran into foul trouble early in the second half when both players picked up their fourth foul each. BSC took advantage to pull within a point, 50-49, with 14:48 remaining.
The Panthers responded with a 12-0 run over the next three minutes. Mark Wagner hit a trey and Mike White finished the spurt with a layup off an assist from Ira Smith.
Both Dugger and Vaughn re-entered the game at the 10 minute mark. Held to a combined five points and three rebounds to that point, the pair finished the game with 18 points and 13 rebounds combined.
Birmingham-Southern got within nine. 65-56, with under nine minutes remaining. From there, the Panthers began to pull away. Jerod Howard's 3 in the closing seconds pushed the Panthers' lead to 24, 90-66.
The game had 52 fouls and two technical fouls called. The Panthers were only 9-for-19 at the line in the first half. They went to the line 31 times in the second half, making 71 percent.
"We did an exceptional job of taking care of the ball," Wallace said. "It is the first time since I have been here we have had more assists than turnovers in a game."
The Panthers finished the game with 12 assists and only 10 turnovers. The Panthers forced 24 turnovers by BSC in the game.
The Panthers play in the Oglethorpe Classic in Atlanta on Saturday and Sunday. The Panthers face 3-0 Emory and 2-0 host Oglethorpe in the tournament.
