Men's Basketball: Second half surge sends Panthers past Covenant

LOOKOUT MOUNTAIN, Ga. - LaGrange used a second half run to down Covenant 77-66 on Saturday. The Panthers improved to 2-0 in the GSAC and 7-10 overall. The Scots dropped to 4-12 with their 11th straight loss.

The Panthers had four of their five starters in double figures. Kyron Anderson led the way with a game-high 19 points. Marcus Vaughn added 13 points, while Joey Anderkavich and Denzel Robinson each had 12. Anderkavich completed his first double-double of the season with a game-high 13 rebounds.

The Panthers shot only 42.1 percent from the floor, while holding the Scots to 37.1 percent shooting. The Panthers went to the free throw line 34 times in the game, making 26. The Scots were 17-of-24 from the line.

Covenant took the lead early in the game and led 24-16 with 6:52 left in the first half. The Panthers got back in the game with an 14-4 spurt to retake the lead, 30-28.

Peter Munch and Aaron Power each had 3-pointers in the run. Power's finished the run with his 3, giving the Panthers their first lead since scoring the opening basket of the game.

Anderkavich's two free throws tied the game at 32. The Scots had a couple of shots at the basket in the final seconds of the half but came up empty as the score remained tied.

The Panthers never trailed in the second half. Anderkavich opened the half with a short jumper in the lane to put the Panthers back in the lead.

Leading 47-45, the Panthers took control of the game with a 12-2 run. Anderson started the run by completing a three-point play and Vaughn's two free throws pushed the Panthers' lead to 12, 59-47, with 9:55 left. It was the largest lead of the game for the Panthers.

The Scots closed the gap to three, 63-60, with 5:29 remaining. The Panthers scored the next eight points to make it an 11-point game, 71-60, with 2:38 left.

The Panthers made their final six free throws to keep the Scots at bay. Anderson had four of the free throws, sandwiched around two by Robinson.

The Panthers host Huntingdon in a GSAC game Wednesday.
