Box Score Visiting Covenant College kept LaGrange College winless on the season with a 56-48 win Wednesday at Mariotti Gym. The Panthers fell to 0-7, while the Scots (1-4) picked up their first win.
Nic Whitfield had a double-double for the Panthers. Whitfield finished the game with 21 points and a game-high 15 rebounds. He was the only Panther in double figures.
Covenant was led by Sam Bowman's double-double of a game-high 23 points and 14 rebounds. Kacey Chambers added 10 points.
The Panthers scored the last seven points of the first half to lead 28-27 at the break. Britt Gaylor hit a 3-pointer, then Whitfield scored off a layup and a dunk to close out the half.
Covenant retook the lead at the start of the second half and held it for over 12 minutes. Alex Brayman scored underneath on a reverse layup to put the Panthers up 43-41 with 7:31 left.
Whitfield gave the Panthers their last lead, 45-44, with a jumper in the lane. Bowman hit a pair of free throws to put the Scots up for good, 46-45, with 5:10 left in the game.
The Panthers shot 30.2 percent from the floor in the game, including 5-of-24 from 3-point range. The Panthers made 5-of-13 free throws.
The Panthers play at N.C. Wesleyan on Saturday and at Greensboro on Sunday.
