Box Score Centre College used a second half run to down LaGrange College 62-48 at Mariotti Gym on Friday. It was the second game of the Coaches vs. Cancer Tipoff Classic as Huntingdon College edged Texas-Tyler 54-52 at the buzzer in the first game.
Greg Ross came off the bench to score a game-high 27 points for Centre (2-0). Ross was 6-of-9 from the floor and 13-of-14 at the free throw line.
Blake Craft and Marcus Vaughn each had 12 points for the Panthers (0-2). Nic Whitfield added 10 points. Whitfield reached 1,000 points in his career with his final basket. He is one rebound shy of 500 in his career.
The Panthers stayed close in the first 10 minutes of the game. Denzel Robinson's 3-pointer gave the Panthers a 13-11 lead with 10:25 left in the half. The Colonels outscored the Panthers 18-8 to take a 29-21 halftime lead.
The Panthers opened the second half with an 11-2 run to retake the lead. Craft started and ended the run with jumpers, the second putting the Panthers up 32-31.
Ross made 1-of-2 free throws to tie the game at 32. Taylor Newsome's basket put the Colonels ahead to stay; 34-32.
Alex Brayman's 3-pointer pulled the Panthers within a point, 36-35, with 11 minutes left. But the Colonels outscored the Panthers 20-5 over the next seven minutes to break the game open.
The Panthers shot 34.7 from the floor in the game. They made 7-of-13 free throws. Centre shot 44.2 percent for the game and hit 19-of-23 at the line.
The tournament concludes Saturday. Centre faces Huntingdon at 2 p.m., followed by the Panthers taking on Texas-Tyler at 4 p.m.
