Box Score 2 WILSON, N.C. - LaGrange stayed alive in the USA South Tournament with two wins on Friday at Fleming Stadium.
The Panthers (18-16) started the day with a 5-2 win over Greensboro in 10 innings. In a game that ended after midnight, the Panthers eliminated Maryville with a 6-2 victory in the nightcap.
The tournament moves to Five County Stadium in Zebulon, N.C. on Saturday. The Panthers face second-seeded North Carolina Wesleyan at 3 p.m. The Panthers must win to remain in the tournament.
The Panthers got outstanding starting pitching from seniors Doug Scherer (7-2) and Robby Williams (3-3). The pair allowed only two earned runs in 18 innings of work.
Williams had a career start in sparking the Panthers past Maryville in the second game. He pitched a complete game for the first time since the 2011 season and set a career high for strikeouts.
Williams struck out 10 in the game and walked only two. In the eighth, the Scots loaded the bases with one out. Williams came back to strike out the last two batters to get out of the jam.
The Panthers went up 1-0 in the third inning. Anthony Iannetta's two-out base hit to left scored Jim Reed, who had reached on a bunt single.
The Panthers carried the lead into the sixth inning. Sending 10 batters to the plate, the Panthers scored five runs to go up 6-0.
The Panthers loaded the bases with one out. Keith Sims was hit by a pitch to force in the first run. Kyle Nerbonne singled through the left side for the second run and Reed walked to drive in another run. Blake Schuck reached on a fielder's choice as the fourth run scored and Josh Shiver capped the inning with a base hit to make it 6-0.
The Scots touched Williams for two runs in the seventh inning to make it 6-2. But Williams got out of the eighth inning jam, then induced a game-ending double play in the ninth.
The Panthers had to work extra innings to knock Greensboro out of the tournament in the first game of the day.
Shiver led off the first inning with a single and promptly stole second, then third. With Iannetta on first, the Panthers executed the double steal as Shiver swiped home on the play for his third stolen base of the inning. Iannetta later scored on Cody Muren's sacrifice fly for a 2-0 lead.
Greensboro got a run back in the second inning and an unearned run in the seventh to tie the game.
The Panthers had only three hits in the first nine innings. With two outs and no one on in the 10th, the Panthers put together three straight hits to take the lead.
Brent Kinsey kept the inning going with the first hit. Jon Brock and Muren followed with their own singles with Muren's scoring Kinsey to put the Panthers up 3-2.
Sims got hit by a pitch to load the bases. Linwood Roberds and Reed both walked to force in two more runs to make it 5-2.
Tyler Brooks relieved Scherer in the bottom of the inning. He allowed a couple of hits but retired the Pride to close out the win and get his fifth save of the season.
