Broom-Time: Panthers Crush Lions in CCS Baseball

LAGRANGE, Ga. – In a game that potentially served as the turning point for their entire season, the LaGrange College baseball team won 19-9 over visiting Piedmont College, the number one team in their league and the 21st-ranked team in the entire country in the latest d3baseball.com poll, in Collegiate Conference of the South (CCS) action on Sunday at Cleaveland Field in Williamson Stadium in LaGrange, Georgia. With the victory, the Panthers completed their three-game sweep over the visiting Lions, having prevailed in dramatic come-from-behind wins on Friday and Saturday. LaGrange – who had entered the series with a 4-8 record in conference play – now finds itself in a three-way tie for fourth place in the CCS standings with next weekend's regular-season ending series against Maryville College looming large.

THE BASICS
Score:                  #21 Piedmont 9, LaGrange 19
Records:             Panthers 18-15, 7-8 CCS | Lions 24-12, 10-5 CCS

HIGHLIGHTS
  • LaGrange freshman centerfielder Tanner Morneau (Marietta, Ga.) had arguably the best game of his collegiate career on Sunday, going three-for-five with a double, a triple, six runs batted in and a walk. Morneau himself crossed home plate four times on the day. Morneau's two-RBI single in the bottom of the seventh put the Panthers up by ten and initiated the mercy rule, effectively serving as a game-winning walk-off hit.
  • Junior designated hitter Nicholas Ford (Canton, Ga.) posted three hits with three RBI, both career-highs.
  • Senior shortstop Jackson McElvy (Kennesaw, Ga.) added two hits, a walk, two RBI and four runs scored.
  • Junior right-handed pitcher Parker Copeland (Madison, Fla.) saw his first action of the season in relief and picked up the win, throwing two shutout innings with one strikeout.
  • Senior third baseman Colin Jones (Duluth, Ga.) drove in three runs off a pair of singles.
UP NEXT
  • LaGrange is back on the field on Thursday when they play host to Maryville in game one of a three-game series to decide their playoff seeding. First pitch is scheduled for 7:00 p.m.
