LAGRANGE, Ga. – The LaGrange College baseball team lost 13-10 against visiting Maryville College in Collegiate Conference of the South (CCS) action on Thursday evening at Cleaveland Field in Phil Williamson Stadium in LaGrange, Georgia. The Panthers run their record to 18-16 overall and 7-9 in the CCS with just two regular season games to play.
HOW IT HAPPENED
- The Panthers got the scoring started in the bottom of the first when an RBI groundout by senior first baseman Curt Bonner (Cartersville, Ga.) drove in senior shortstop Jackson McElvy (Kennesaw, Ga.) to give LaGrange the 1-0 lead through one.
- The hosts would add three more in the bottom of the second as McElvy hit a two RBI single to increase the LaGrange lead to three. On the very next at-bat, freshman centerfielder Tanner Morneau (Marietta, Ga.), last week's CCS Rookie of the Week, hit an RBI single as the Panthers went ahead 4-0.
- The game turned in the top of the fourth as a series of mistakes, bad luck and a questionable call by an umpire saw the Scots plate seven to surge into the lead.
- Down 10-4 in the bottom of the fifth, an RBI groundout by senior third baseman Colin Jones (Duluth, Ga.) drove in Morneau. On the very next at-bat, graduate right fielder Jorge Fragoso (East Point, Ga.) singled up the middle to drive in Bonner to cut the lead to four.
- Trailing 13-6 in the bottom of the eighth, the Panthers started to rally. After the first two outs, McElvy reached on a walk, followed by a single up the middle by Morneau. Bonner stepped to the plate, and sent the first pitch he saw into left field for an RBI single as McElvy scored. On the very next at-bat, senior pinch-hitter Evan Graham (Roswell, Ga.) came to the plate for the first time this season and singled to centerfield to drive in Morneau. It was Graham's second career hit as LaGrange had pulled to within five.
- In the bottom of the ninth, Fragoso led off with a double. Two batters later, senior catcher Carson Burgamy (Woodstock, Ga.) doubled in Fragoso to cut the lead to four. McElvy stepped to the plate and single to drive in Burgamy, giving the Panthers their tenth run of the night. Two batters later with two outs, Bonner drew a hit by pitch to load the bases. Graham stepped to the plate with a chance for a fairytale ending but he flied out to center for the final out.
