LAGRANGE, Ga. – The LaGrange College baseball team opened their three-game series against 14
th-ranked Piedmont University with a 7-6 victory in extra innings in Collegiate Conference of the South (CCS) action on Friday evening at Cleaveland Field in Phil Williamson Stadium in LaGrange, Ga.
THE BASICS
Score: LaGrange 7, Piedmont 6 – 11 Innings
Records: Panthers 16-15, 5-8 CCS | Lions 24-10, 10-3 CCS
HOW IT HAPPENED
- The Panthers fell behind 3-0 in the top of the first, as the Lions got their bats going early.
- Senior Jackson McElvy (Kennesaw, Ga.) got LaGrange on the board in the bottom of the first as he crossed the plate to make it 3-1 Lions.
- Piedmont continued the offensive showcase as they went up 5-1 in the top of the second inning. Still, LC freshman pitcher Aiden Pluff (Richmond Hill, Ga.) & Co were able to limit the damage and respond with four-consecutive innings of shutout ball.
- Junior DH Nicholas Ford (Canton, Ga.) laid down a 2RBI shot through the left side in the third inning to make it a two-run ball game as the Panthers trailed just 5-3.
- The Lions added an insurance run in the seventh to lead 6-3 late.
- Seniors Curt Bonner (Cartersville, Ga.) and Colin Jones (Duluth, Ga.) would add a pair of runs in the eighth as they found themselves within a couple swings of pulling off the major victory.
- Down to their final two outs in the bottom of the ninth, LC pulled off one of the most heroic moments of the season as Bonner singled up the middle to get McElvy home and force an extra-inning affair.
- In the bottom of the 11th inning, Curt Bonner once again stepped up the plate, this time with the bases loaded and only one out on the board for the nationally-ranked Lions. After an all-out duel of an at-bat between Piedmont's Averett Thompson and Bonner, it was the gentleman in the Red and Black who found himself the hero as he took the game-winning hit-by-pitch with pride to give his team the season-defining victory.
- Sophomore pitcher Josiah Chiesa (Dalton, Ga.) earned the victory for the Panthers as he pitched four masterful innings late on the mound.
