COLUMBUS, Ga. – The LaGrange College softball team went 2-2 at the NFCA Division III Leadoff Classic this weekend at the South Commons Softball Complex in Columbus, Georgia, splitting their games on both days.
GAME 1 – SUNY CORTLAND 4, LAGRANGE 6
- Down 1-0 in the bottom of the first, the Panthers tied it up off a bases loaded RBI hit by pitch drawn by first baseman sophomore infielder Kayla Helms (Dallas, Ga.) to plate senior second baseman Claire Chamberlain (Rome, Ga.), 1-1. On the very next at-bat, sophomore catcher Emma Seymour (Carrollton, Ga.) drew an RBI walk as freshman designated player Addison Gibboney (Kennesaw, Ga.) scored to put LC in the lead. On the next at bat, junior right fielder Hannah Barnett (Douglasville, Ga.) drew another RBI HBP as freshman shortstop Kamie Gibby (McDonough, Ga.) scored to put the Panthers up 3-1. Two batters later, sophomore centerfielder Addi Grace Dennis (Grayson, Ga.) ripped a double to the outfield to drive in Seymour and Helms, blowing the game open at 5-1.
- Later up 5-3 in the bottom of the sixth, Gibby hit an RBI triple to drive in sophomore pinch runner Lexi Mitchell (Shiloh, Ga.) for an insurance run.
- Senior first baseman Jenna Yeary (Loganville, Ga.) picked up the win, striking out two in seven innings.
GAME 2 – PACIFIC LUTHERAN 10, LAGRANGE 0
- The Lutes of Pacific Lutheran shutout the Panthers in the second game on Saturday, pulling away with nine runs.
- Chamberlain and Yeary both had hits against Pacific Lutheran.
GAME 3 – LAGRANGE 7, STEVENS 3
- On Sunday, the Panthers found themselves down 1-0 in the top of the second against Stevens when an RBI single by Helms drove in Gibby to tie it up. Two batters later, freshman left fielder Bri Totty (Hurtsboro, Ala.) hit a sacrifice fly to plate Barnett as LaGrange took the lead.
- In the top of the sixth, the Panthers exploded for three runs. Barnett scored on a passed ball, followed up by an RBI single up the middle by Totty. Finally, an RBI double by Dennis drove in freshman pinch runner Bailey Gamel (Dallas, Ga.).
- In the top of the seventh inning, the Panthers picked up an insurance run when Gibby hit her first career home run, as well as the first of the season for LaGrange.
- Yeary allowed just one earned run in seven innings with four strikeouts.
GAME 4 – LAGRANGE 2, DEPAUW 10
- Down 5-0 in the top of the fifth against DePauw, the Panthers got on the board off an RBI single from Seymour to plate Helms. Seymour later scored off an error to make it 5-2.
- Helms went two-for-two in the game while Chamberlain finished two-for three.

- LaGrange is back on the field on Tuesday when they play host to Spalding University at 12:00 p.m. at the LC Softball Complex.
