Softball Rallies to Sweep Spalding in Tuesday DH

LAGRANGE, Ga. – The LaGrange College softball team picked up their first sweep of the season in their double-header against visiting Spalding University in non-conference action on Tuesday afternoon at the LC Softball Complex in LaGrange, Georgia. The Panthers run their season record to 5-13 while the Golden Eagles are now 3-10.

GAME 1 – SPALDING 4, LAGRANGE 6
  • LaGrange senior first baseman Jenna Yeary (Loganville, Ga.) got the Panthers on the board in the bottom of the first inning when she doubled to left to drive in freshman shortstop Kamie Gibby (McDonough, Ga.) to go ahead 1-0.
  • Down 2-1 in the bottom of the second, senior pitcher Claire Chamberlain (Rome, Ga.) tied it up with an RBI single up the middle to plate junior catcher Brooke Coleman (Hiram, Ga.). On the very next at-bat, an RBI single by sophomore third baseman Cannon Ramsey (Tallahassee, Fla.) drove in junior right fielder Hannah Barnett (Douglasville, Ga.) and sophomore centerfielder Addi Grace Dennis (Grayson, Ga.) to put them ahead 4-2 after two.
  • In the bottom of the third, sophomore designated player Kayla Helms (Dallas, Ga.) scored from third on a caught foul ball to make it 5-2.
  • In the bottom of the fourth, Gibby was at the plate when a failed fielder's choice allowed Ramsey to score to make it 6-2.
  • Spalding added two runs in the top of the sixth, but Chamberlain was able to power through it, picking up her first win of the season and allowing just five hits over seven innings.
GAME 2 – SPALDING 3, LAGRANGE 5
  • Yeary got the start in game two, allowing just one earned run in seven innings and striking out six Golden Eagles.
  • Down 3-0 in the bottom of the first, freshman designated player Addison Gibboney (Kennesaw, Ga.) started the rally with an RBI single to drive in Chamberlain.
  • Still down 3-1 in the bottom of the second, Dennis hit an RBI single to center to drive in Barnett, cutting the lead to one.
  • In the bottom of the fourth, Chamberlain came to the plate with two runners on an hit a bases-clearing triple to right to plate Dennis and Coleman to take the lead. Two batters later, an RBI groundout by Yeary scored Chamberlain, and that would be all the offense the Panthers would need.
FOR THE PANTHERS
  • Freshman outfielder Bri Totty (Hurtsboro, Ala.) went two-for-six on the day.

  • LaGrange is back on the field on Thursday when they play host to Gettysburg College in a 12:00 p.m. double-header.
