Baseball picks up first CCS win against Asbury Saturday

LAGRANGE, Ga. – The LaGrange College baseball team split their doubleheader against visiting Asbury University in Collegiate Conference of the South (CCS) action on Saturday at Cleaveland Field in Phil Williamson Stadium in LaGrange, Georgia. Although suffering a heartbreaking 5-4 loss in the opener, the Panthers rebounded with a 9-4 come-from-behind victory in game two, improving their record to 12-11 (1-4 CCS).

GAME 1 – ASBURY 5, LAGRANGE 4
  • LC struck first in the bottom of the opening inning as Tanner Morneau's (Marietta, Ga.) sac-fly put his team up 1-0 early.
  • The Eagles were able to respond with three runs in the next two innings to go up 3-1 after three innings of play.
  • Jackson McElvy (Kennesaw, Ga.) singled to right field to score Ben Hollenbeck (Newnan, Ga.) as the Panthers trailed just 3-2 after six innings.
  • AU put up a pair of insurance runs in the seventh inning as LaGrange found itself with work to do late.
  • The Panthers did all they could to rally in the bottom of the ninth, coming within a run of tying the game. With runners at the corners, a flyout would crush their hopes of completing the comeback as Asbury took game one of the series 5-4.
GAME 2 – ASBURY 4, LAGRANGE 9
  • Things looked as if they might get even uglier in game two as the Eagles jumped out to a 4-0 lead in the second inning.
  • Morneau struck again as he homered to put the Panthers on the board in the fifth inning, now trailing 4-1.
  • With the late knockings of the game approaching, the Red and Black knew they had to do something in order to turn their recent misfortunes around. They would do just that, as a five-run seventh inning put them in front 6-4.
  • McElvy once again helped the increasingly hot LC bats with an RBI single to give the good guys a 9-4 advantage with just three outs standing between them and their first conference win. The Panthers would hold on as they tied the series at one game-apiece.
