MONTGOMERY, Ala.– The LaGrange College baseball team opened their 2026 season with a 7-1 victory over Schreiner University at the Firehouse Classic Hosted by Huntingdon College in non-conference action on Friday evening at Neal Posey Field in Montgomery, Alabama.

HOW IT HAPPENED
- The Panthers scored their first run of the season in the top of the first inning when graduate leftfielder Jorge Fragoso (East Point, Ga.) came to the plate with the bases loaded and hit an RBI groundout to drive in freshman second baseman Collin McGhee (Ball Ground, Ga.) to go up 1-0.
- In the top of the fifth, McGhee scored off an error and senior designated hitter Curt Bonner (Cartersville, Ga.) singled up the left side to plate senior centerfielder Jackson McElvy (Kennesaw, Ga.). Finally, an RBI double by sophomore third baseman Erick Rodriguez (Lilburn, Ga.) put LaGrange up 4-1 to close out their bracket in the fifth.
- In the top of the sixth, an RBI single by McElvy and a two-RBI single by senior first baseman Colin Jones (Duluth, Ga.) gave the Panthers a commanding 7-1 lead as they would coast the rest of the way.
- LaGrange sophomore pitcher Josiah Chiesa (Dalton, Ga.) picked up the win, striking out five Mountaineers in four innings. Freshman pitcher Ben Atkinson (Madison, Ga.) delivered four shutout innings, allowing just two hits.
