MARYVILLE, TN - The LaGrange College Softball Team (13-15, 3-3 Collegiate Conference of the South) walked away with a split result on Friday (Apr. 4) in doubleheader action against CCS rivals Maryville College (12-16, 4-4 CCS), losing the first game 8-4 and bouncing back in dominant fashion to take game two with a 13-4 run-rule result.
Game One Summary
Zoe Veres drew first blood for LC as her fielder's choice RBI brought
Jaselyn Couch home to give LaGrange an early 1-0 lead. The host Scots responded in the bottom half of the first with a run of their own to make it 1-1 after the first.
Both teams traded blows throughout, as LC found themselves with a bit of momentum after taking a 4-3 lead in the top of the fifth inning. The game simply got away from the Panthers after that, as Maryville bursted for five runs to snag a commanding four-run lead late in the game. The visitors in Red and Black could not muster a comeback, unfortunately, dropping game one 8-4.
Game Two
The second tilt was all-LC, as they recaptured the semblance of the team that had run-ruled the Scots in back-to-back games earlier in the season. Veres once again got things going for LaGrange, blasting an RBI single into left field to score Couch and take an early 1-0 lead.
The Panthers scored with great consistency, finding runs in every inning but the fourth. Veres blew the game wide open for LC in the fifth inning, laying down a devastating three-RBI double to give her squad a 10-4 lead.
Kenzie Hornsby and
Lexi Mitchell secured the victory for LC, notching the necessary RBI double (Hornsby) and single (Mitchell) to force the run-rule victory.
Panthers of the Day
Veres led the team with four hits in eight at-bats on the day, scoring six RBI's in the process.
Jenna Yeary received credit for the win in game two, striking out three in a one-hit, three-inning shutout for the Loganville, Ga native.
