MOUNT BERRY, Ga. - Marietta ended LaGrange's four-game winning streak with a 5-3 win Saturday over the Panthers at Berry College's Bowdoin Field. The loss left the Panthers 8-7 on the season, while the Pioneers are 4-2.
Marietta took a 2-0 lead in the third inning off
Josiah Chiesa (3-1). Chiesa pitched 5-1/3 innings, allowing four runs, three of those were earned. He struck out six, walked three, and scattered six hits.
LaGrange got a run back in the fourth inning.
David Smigelski led off with a double and moved over to third on a ground out. Smigelski scored as
Colby Zinser reached on a fielder's choice.
The Panthers tied the game in their half of the fifth.
Noah Preuer walked with one out and went to second on a ground out.
Adam Dorn singled down the right field line, scoring Preuer with the tying run.
The Pioneers chased Chiesa in the top of the sixth with two runs to take the lead for good, 4-2.
Bryce Stephens relieved Chiesa and struck out the next two Pioneers to end the inning.
LaGrange loaded the bases with no outs in the seventh inning. The Panthers managed to push across one run on a double play to make it 4-3. Marietta added an insurance run in the eighth for the 5-3 final score.
