WILMORE, Ky. - The LaGrange College Baseball Team (11-7) capped off their spring break with an emphatic doubleheader win on Friday night (Mar. 14), overwhelming the Eagles of Asbury University (3-9) by respective final scores of 25-13 and 31-16 at Zweifel Baseball Field. The series sweep marked LC's fourth in a row to open conference play since 2022.
Game One Summary
Both teams started the first game solid defensively, each with a shutout in the first inning. Asbury threw the first punch come the bottom of the second inning, tacking on the game's first three runs as they held a 3-0 lead after two. LC retaliated majorly as they leap-frogged the Eagles with nine runs in the top of the third.
Colin Jones led the charge once again, driving in a three-run homer to give the Red and Black a 9-3 lead heading into the bottom half of the frame. Not to be outdone by the visitors, AU continued their hot streak, nearly doubling their efforts from the second inning as they drove in five runs to cut the LaGrange advantage to just a single run.
The back-and-forth affair continued well into the fifth, as the Panthers played keep away from the Eagles, who were able to stay within striking distance of a LaGrange squad who remained on top 11-10 after four innings of ball. LC turned the heat up several notches from that point on, scorching the AU relief pitching to take a suffocating 25-10 lead with only a few innings left in the contest. Try as they might, the Eagles could only muster three runs as the Panthers held on to take game one 25-13.
Game Two Summary
The second game was all-LaGrange as
Tray Owens and
Fletcher Hislop combined for 11 runs. LC came out swinging with a 12-run burst as they led 12-2 heading into the third inning. The Eagle bats woke up a bit, notching six runs of their own to try and cut down the LaGrange lead. The Panthers' scoring remained relentless, as
Colin Jones added two more homers to his season total, driving in four more runs to pad the LC lead. With the run-rule looming in the bottom of the seventh, Asbury did all they could to stave off the fiery visitors who could smell a fourth-consecutive, conference-opening series sweep on the horizon. Ultimately, the good guys were able to force the game's conclusion as they went on to win emphatically 31-16 to start conference play off with a bang.
Panthers of the Game
Fletch Hislop led LC with 11 RBI's on the day. The St. Petersburg, Fl native reached base on all nine at-bats, blasting a pair of home runs in the process as well.
Colin Jones shined for LaGrange once again, going yard three times and racking up nine RBI's in the doubleheader.
