Stars shine for LC as Panthers prevail over Scots to advance to conference semis

MARYVILLE, TN - The LaGrange College Women's Basketball Team picked up their biggest win of the season Tuesday night (Feb. 25), edging the Maryville Scots on the road in the quarterfinal round of the CCS Tournament. The win marks the first time LaGrange has bested the Scots in postseason tournament play since 2011. Maryville had won the last eight conference tournament meetings before tonight.

Game Summary
The Panthers came out swinging in the game's onset, leading 8-5 after the first three minutes of play. Maryville began to pick up the pace themselves, striking up an eight-point advantage at one point in the opening quarter. The Panthers trimmed down the deficit to five as the Scots held a 22-17 lead at the end of one.

Things did not improve for LC in the second quarter, as Maryville began to dominate on both sides of the ball, limiting LaGrange to just 12 points. Going down by as much as 16, the Panthers did all they could to stop the bleeding caused by the hosts, who looked like they were well on their way to a semifinal appearance on Friday. They would chip away slightly at the Scots' lead as they trailed 41-29 at the half.

In one of the most epic momentum swings of the year for the Red and Black, LC's 22-9 third quarter proved to be the stuff of legend as they completely recaptured control of the game. They eventually regained the lead with 20 seconds left in the quarter as Zyhia Johnson's jumper ignited the entire LaGrange bench, who had suddenly found new life.

The fourth quarter was nothing short of a nailbiting toe-to-toe battle, as the two school's traded the lead 10 times in an effort to advance themselves to Friday's semifinal round. After a three from Johnson gave the Panthers a two-point lead with just over two minutes remaining in the game, a sudden stalemate ensued between the two squads. The offensive drought was joyfully broken by the visiting LC, who secured foul territory with 30 seconds left in the contest. Although leaving the Scots plenty of chances to tie or equalize, LaGrange was able to stave off Maryville's last-ditch effort in the final seconds to secure their spot in the semis with Piedmont on Friday.

Zyhia Johnson matched her season high with 28 points on the night, adding four rebounds and a pair of assists to the mix as well.

Kendra Roberts will go down as the unsung hero for LC on the night, with a solid 15-point game that saw a dominant 94-ft game to the tune of seven rebounds, five assists, four steals and three blocks to the Houston County High School product's ledger.
