LAGRANGE, Ga. - LC Women's Basketball (14-11, 8-8 Collegiate Conference of the South) tasted victory for the third-consecutive outing Saturday afternoon (Feb 22), besting the Scots of Covenant College (9-15, 5-11 CCS) by a final score of 63-57 in Historic Mariotti Gymnasium. The game was also Senior Day, where the Panthers recognized Brittney Chavez,
Zyhia Johnson,
Amya Walker and
Kendra Roberts.
Game Summary
LC started sluggish from the field in the first period. Shooting only 29%, the Panthers carried a four-point lead into the second quarter thanks to great free throw shooting (9/10 in first quarter) and solid defense. Only three players scored in the first for the Scots, and they found themselves down 16-12.
The second quarter proved to be very different for LaGrange. While their shooting from the field improved, LC went 1/7 in the second quarter from the charity stripe. The two teams traded leads throughout, with a huge
Laila Battle three extending the Panther lead to four entering the intermission.
LC looked as if they were on their well on pace to running away with the ball game entering the second half. The Panthers outscored the Scots 15-9 in the third, with a
Jaz Watson jumper pushing the advantage back up to 12 entering the final 10 minutes. The defense in the third was suffocating for LC, only allowing two field goals in the period and hoped to increase the lead and send the Panther faithful home happy.
The final quarter of play proved not to be this way. As the quarter went on, Covenant kept chipping into the LC lead, and with 4:07 left in the game, the Scots had brought it all the way back to a tie game. The Panthers then went to work. Forcing multiple Scot turnovers and fouls, LaGrange went to the line 13 times in the final three and a half minutes, making good on 10 of their charity-stripe appearances. A pair of clutch free throws made by Johnson extended the Panthers lead to two possessions with just 15 seconds left. With Covenant's star Breezy Savage out of the game with five fouls, the Scots couldn't muster much in a last gasp effort, leading to an LC six-point victory on Senior Day.
Panther of the Game
While Johnson did not have her best outing, she contributed all 94 feet. She led the team with 10 rebounds and three steals, respectively. She also had 14 points, giving the Homerville, Ga native her fourth double-double of the season.
