LaGRANGE, Ga. - LaGrange's last inning rally fell short in a 8-6 loss to No. 3 Endicott on Sunday in Cleaveland Field at Williamson Stadium. The Gulls (2-1) took the weekend series with the win, while the Panthers fell to 4-5 on the season.
LC committed seven errors defensively in the game and at the plate hit into three double plays. The Gulls took advantage of the Panther miscues to build a 6-0 lead heading into the bottom of the seventh inning.
The Panthers had been held to one hit by the Gulls' Brady Stuart (1-0) over six innings.
Colby Zinser walked with one out in the seventh and went to third on
Fletcher Hislop's single through the right side. Zinser scored the Panthers' first run on
Jorge Fragoso's sacrifice fly. Hislop stole second and came around to score on
Eli Selby's RBI single to make it 6-2.
Endicott came back with two runs in the eighth inning and took an 8-2 lead into the bottom of the ninth. Zinser led off the ninth for LC with a double down the left field line. One out later, Fragoso drove in Zinser with a double of his own off the right field wall. Selby followed with a run-scoring single up the middle cut Endicott's lead to 8-4.
Erick Rodriquez was hit by a pitch and
Noah Preuer's single loaded the bases.
Adam Dorn reached on an error as Selby scored.
David Smigelski made it a two-run game, 8-6, with a sacrifice fly as Rodriguez came home.
Curt Bonner was hit by a pitch to reload the bases. The Gulls escaped as Zinser, batting for the second time in the inning, flew out to deep right field to end the game.
Keller Morey (1-1) started on the mound for the Panthers. He gave up six runs, only three earned, in six innings. He walked two and struck out five.
The Panthers face Emory on Tuesday, February 25 at 6 p.m. in Cleaveland Field at Williamson Stadium.
