ATLANTA, Ga. – LaGrange (2-4) split two games at the Emory Classic on Saturday. The Panthers thumped Maryville 10-1 in six innings, after falling 8-1 to tournament host Emory earlier in the day.
LaGrange 10, Maryville 1
Lily Rae Fulford (1-1) pitched a complete game on the mound for LC. She allowed the lone run, scattered seven hits, struck out three and walked one.
Jaselyn Couch led the Panthers' 10-hit attack with three hits, including a double. She scored two runs and drove in a run.
Zoe Veres had two hits, including the Panthers' first home run of the season.
Maryville took a quick 1-0 lead in the first inning. The Panthers came back with four runs in the second inning. Addie Grace Dennis' RBI single drove in the first run. Dennis came around to score on Couch's double to left field for a 2-1 lead. Couch and Claire Chamberlin later scored on wild pitches to close out the inning.
The Panthers padded their lead with three runs in the fourth inning.
Cannon Ramsey had an RBI double and
Alexa Gonzalez added a run-scoring single in the inning.
LC ended the game on the 8-run mercy rule in the sixth. Veres' two-run home run to left field provided the 10-1 final score.
Emory 8, LaGrange 1
Emory used a five-run sixth inning to break open the first game of the day. The Eagles had a run in the first inning and added an unearned run in the third inning to take a 2-0 lead.
The Panthers cut the deficit to one run in the fourth inning. Kayley Helms opened the inning with an infield hit. One out later, Zoe Veras walked to put runners on first and second.
Claire Chamberlain followed with a single to left to bring in Helms to make it 2-1.
Emory took a 3-1 lead into the bottom of the sixth. The Eagles got a grand slam from Ellie Zerr to cap the five-run inning. Zerr accounted for five RBIs in the game.
Jenna Yeary (1-1) took the loss for LC. Yeary pitched 5-2/3 innings, allowing eight runs, six of which were earned. Chamberlain got the final out of the sixth inning.
Up Next: The Panthers finish the tournament Sunday. They face Maryville at 12 p.m. followed by Emory at 2 p.m.
