Women's Basketball edges Point in Battle of Highway 29

Box Score WEST POINT, Ga. – The LaGrange College women's basketball team won 64-61 over hosts Point University in non-conference action on Saturday afternoon at the West Point Park Gymnasium in West Point, Georgia.

THE BASICS
Score:                  Point 61, LaGrange 64
Records:             Panthers 3-2, 0-0 CCS | Skyhawks 0-7, 0-0 SSAC

HOW IT HAPPENED
  • Both offenses took time to click in the game's onset, with Point grabbing a 17-8 lead at one point in the opening quarter before the Panthers rebounded to trail by just four at the end of one.
  • The winless Skyhawks were adamant on ensuring the Panthers would have to fight for every point, as they extended their lead over LC by as much as 13 at the half.
  • Things seemed to get worse for the Red and Black as the host Skyhawks took a commanding 16-point lead midway through the third quarter. Thanks to some tough defensive play and timely baskets by junior Amanda Mclendon (Orlando, Fla.), however, the Panthers found themselves within arms reach heading into the fourth quarter of play, trailing just 49-41.
  • Laila Battle (Smyrna, Ga.) completed the comeback for LaGrange when she tied the game and drained the go-ahead and-one to put her squad in front 53-52 with 5:41 remaining in the contest.
  • The Panthers found themselves in another tight battle as they led by just a single point with 13 seconds remaining in regulation. Thankfully for LC, they would hold off the pressing Skyhawks to earn their third-consecutive win of the season. The three-game winning streak marks their first since they won four in a row at the end of last season.
INSIDE THE NUMBERS
  • Mclendon led LaGrange with 18 points and nine rebounds.
  • Battle and freshman Mya Anderson (Jones County, Ga.) weren't far behind with 16 and 14-point showings, respectively.
UP NEXT
  • LaGrange is back on the court on Tuesday when they travel to Oglethorpe University for a 7:30 p.m. tip from the Dorough Field House.
