Women’s Volleyball Outlasts Hawks in Five

MONTGOMERY, Ala. – The LaGrange College women's volleyball team won in five sets at Huntingdon College in Collegiate Conference of the South (CCS) action on Wednesday evening at Roland Arena in Montgomery, Alabama.

THE BASICS
Score:                  LaGrange College 3, Huntingdon 2 (26-24, 18-25, 21-25, 25-16, 15-8)
Records:             Panthers 10-16, 8-4 CCS | Hawks 15-13, 6-5 CCS

HOW IT HAPPENED
  • Down 23-18 in the first set, the Panthers rallied to tie it up by winning five straight rallies, four of those coming off the serve of LaGrange sophomore libero Isabella Zentkovich (Sharpsburg, Ga.). Down 24-23 and facing the wrong end of set point, LaGrange freshman outside hitter Jasmine Gross (Antioch, Tenn.) put down back-to-back kills while freshman middle-blocker Kaitlyn Smith (Buckeye, Ariz.) and sophomore right-side hitter Akajah Burton (West Valley City, Ut.) combined for a clutch block as the Panthers took three straight to claim the set.
  • After falling short in the second and third sets, the Panthers came roaring back in the fourth, jumping out to a 16-8 lead and never looking back as a kill by LaGrange freshman outside hitter Alex Krabs (Boynton Beach, Fla.) put the set away. Just like that, it was tied and headed to the fifth.
  • Down 2-0 in the fifth set, the Panthers got on the board with another kill by Krabs as LaGrange sophomore setter Julia Damico (North Port, Fla.) took over as server, winning six straight rallies as the visitors went up 7-2. Then with Zentkovich holding serve, the Panthers reeled off five more points to setup match point at 14-6. A kill by senior middle-hitter Zentrina Choice (Sumter, S.C.) finished off the Hawks, as LaGrange moved one step closer to the CCS playoffs.
INSIDE THE NUMBERS
  • Krabs, last week's CCS Rookie of the Week, overcame a slow start to finish with 16 kills and two blocks with 14 digs to lead the Panthers.
  • Gross added nine kills with eleven digs, while Damico set the table with 15 set assists, three aces and a match-high 19 digs.
  • LaGrange sophomore setter Rebecca Miranda (Snellville, Ga.) posted a team-high 18 set assists while serving eleven times without an error.
  • Huntingdon sophomore outside hitter Morgan Suggs (Portland, Tex.) led the Hawks with nine kills and eleven digs.
UP NEXT
  • LaGrange is back on the court on Saturday when they travel to Covenant College for a CCS tri-match against the host Scots and the Lions of Piedmont University.
  • Huntingdon plays their next game at the Wesleyan tri-match, that also coming on Saturday.
