LAGRANGE, Ga. - LC Women's Basketball (9-5, 3-2 Collegiate Conference of the South) tasted sweet victory Friday night (Jan. 17), besting the visiting Maryville Scots (2-10, 1-2 CCS) by a final score of 63-57 in Mariotti Gym.
Game Summary
The Panthers' three top scorers,
Amanda Mclendon,
Laila Battle and
Zyhia Johnson, each traded buckets early in the game as LC led 9-6 after the first five minutes of play. Feeling good from three, the Scots moved in front with two quick shots from behind the arc as LaGrange trailed 22-14 at the end of one.
Turnovers plagued the LC offense in the first half, as they struggled to find ways to attack the Maryville defense. Solid defense of their own would keep the game within manageable reach as they entered halftime down 34-28.
It seemed as if the Panthers would be unable to overcome their offensive struggles, as the Scots went up by as much as 13 at one point in the third quarter. Unwilling to let the visitors take Mariotti Gym's first contest of 2025, LaGrange began to fight back with a handful of baskets to trim the deficit down to eight heading into the fourth quarter.
The final quarter of play was all-drama as the Panthers' efforts to rally finally took shape with 7:45 remaining in the game, bringing the score to within a single point. After the Scots extended their lead to nine with just over three minutes left, it was do-or-die for LaGrange. The Panthers completed the comeback, taking a 57-56 lead with 47 seconds remaining. Clutch defensive stops and free throws sealed it as they held on to win 63-57 in come-from-behind fashion.
Panther of the Game
