LAGRANGE, Ga. - The LaGrange College Women's Basketball Team (8-5, 2-2 Collegiate Conference of the South) comes back home Friday (Jan. 17) to face the Scots of Maryville College (2-9, 1-1 CCS). This conference matchup will be the first home game for the Panthers since November 26th, where they downed the Stormy Petrels of Oglethorpe.
The Matchup
LC comes into the matchup on a two-game skid, losing earlier this week to the Lions of Piedmont University. Entering the final period trailing by only three, the Panthers' chances slipped away late as they fell 81-65. They have won four of the last five meetings against the Scots, including three in a row inside Mariotti Gym. LaGrange will look to snap their two-game losing streak in their first home tilt of 2025, against a tough Maryville team desperate for a win to jumpstart their season.
As for the Scots, they have struggled in non-conference play, starting out the year 1-8. Maryville picked up their play in conference recently, however, throttling Wesleyan College and losing a tight game on the road against Asbury University earlier this week. The Scots have owned the matchup historically against the Panthers, leading the all-time series 28-8. They will look to extend their win streak against LC to two games and pick up their third win of the season.
Players to Watch
Zyhia Johnson has been a playmaker for the Panthers all season. She scored her 1,000th career point in the loss to Piedmont and has picked up where she left off from her all-conference campaign last season. She leads the Panthers in points with 208, good for 17.3 points per game. LC will certainly look for her to be involved early and often on Friday.
The Scots will look to Ella Haney to score and make plays against the LaGrange defense. The Murfreesboro, TN native leads the team in points with 128 on the season, averaging out to 11.6 points per game. Look for her on the outside as well, as she leads the team in three pointers made with 12.
