Game Recap: Women's Volleyball | | DJ Hayes

Panthers Volleyball falls to WPU and Lynchburg

The LaGrange Panthers Women's Volleyball Team started the weekend quad-match 0-2 after dropping both matches to William Peace University and University of Lynchburg Friday night (Sept. 13).

Match One Details

The Panthers started the first set with a service ace from freshman Mamie Martenstein to grab the early momentum in an opening 10-7 run. The Pacers fought valiantly, but could not keep the pace as LaGrange walked away with a first set win 25-17.

WPU found their game and never looked back in set two, hitting LC with a 10-7 run of their own. The Panthers would grab the lead a couple times during the set, but could not quite secure enough momentum to get ahead into a winning position, as the Pacers took the second set 25-16.

The Pacers made it back-to-back set wins as they continued to rack up assists and digs with 56 and 68, respectively, for a 25-14 win.

LaGrange scored first in each of the first three sets and continued that trend in the fourth before finding themselves with their backs against the ropes, down ten on two separate occasions. They were nearly able to storm back as they brought the set within four with a 21-17 score, but WPU was able to stave off the rally as they took down the Panthers 25-17, winning the match 3-1.

Match Two Details

LaGrange took on host Lynchburg College in the second match of the evening, seemingly tracking with the Hornets punch for punch to begin the first set. After only being down 5-6 to begin the set, the visiting Panthers were quickly jumped by a 13-4 Lynchburg run which turned a one-point deficit into a commanding 19-9 advantage. The effort to rally was ultimately denied as the Hornets walked away with the victory, winning the first set 25-15.

The second set yielded a similar result for the Panthers, as they were bested 25-16 on the heels of six attack errors and four WPU service aces.

LaGrange was able to keep the match alive with an impressive third set victory as they outpaced the Hornets 25-16.

The Panthers' attempt to claw their way back into the match fell short in set four, as Lynchburg capped off a strong performance with a 25-15 victory to take the match by a final of 3-1.
