The Piedmont Lions did just enough to secure a 8-7 extra innings win over the Panthers in round one of the CCS Postseason Tournament (May 1).
Game details
Claire Chamberlain was today's first Panther pitcher. In 99 innings pitched this season, she has posted a 7-10 W/L record and a 4.35 ERA. In the opening frame, LC grabbed a 1-0 lead after
Katelyn Minnihan crushed an RBI double over the center fielder's head. The Panthers held this lead until the Lions batting exploded during the third inning. After three, PU was up 4-1. In the following inning, the Panthers responded with a run when
Jenna Yeary hit an RBI double. The Lions extended their lead to 6-2 in the fifth after hitting a pair of sacrifice RBIs. During the sixth, PU committed throwing errors on back-to-back plays, allowing
Alexa Gonzalez and
Breonn Newbille to score. The Lions answered with a run to go up 7-4 headed into the seventh. In the final inning, LC cut the Lions lead to just two when another error let a Panther base runner score. With two outs, it looked like the game was going to come to an end. That was until the Lions dropped an infield fly and then threw a bad ball to first, allowing two LC base runners to score. During the bottom of the inning,
Jenna Yeary relieved
Claire Chamberlain on the mound. Chamberlain allowed seven runs off of six hits. The Lions were unable to score in the seventh, forcing extra innings. Sadly, the Lions would win 8-7 during the bottom of the eighth.
