Box Score Laila Battle drops 30 points in the LC Basketball's 78-58 win over the Scots (Feb. 9).Â
First half details
Tonight's final Friday game of the regular season started very tight. Covenant jumped out to a 5-3 lead, after a break in the Panther defense left a wide open Scot at the top of the arc to knock down a three.
Laila Battle would answer with a three of her own to take a 6-5 LC lead. On the next drive, Battle would extend it to 8-5 when she made an explosive move past her defender and hit a contested layup. The first quarter would have six total lead changes, but the Scots would end up on top 21-15 at the break.
Laila Battle finished with a team-high seven points in the quarter. The Scots began the second period going up 23-18.Â
Amya Walker would come off the bench and hit back-to-back layups to close the Covenant lead to 24-22 with five minutes remaining. Over the next few minutes, the lead would stay close due to neither team's shots falling. A big reason the Scots struggled to score was because the Panthers ran a full court press for the remainder of the half. This completely threw off the set offense that the Scots normally ran. LC would lead at the half 32-27.
Laila Battle finished with a team-high 11 points, shooting 57% from the field and 50% from three.Â
Second half details
The Panthers came out of the half going on a 5-0 run after
Zyhia Johnson hit a three and then a mid-range jump shot. Only a couple of possessions later,
Zyhia Johnson would hit another three to extend the Panther lead to 40-29 and force a Covenant time out. Once Johnson went to the bench,
Laila Battle came onto the court and picked up right where Zyhia left off. Battle would hit three three-pointers in a row to extend the LC lead to 56-36 with under two minutes remaining in the third. At the break, LC led 61-38. The Panthers continued to hold a healthy lead throughout the final quarter. Similarly to the game against Agnes Scot (Feb.6), the big lead allowed many different Panthers to see the court tonight. Despite allowing the Scots to turn off some of that lead, the newly rotated Panthers played great tonight. LC would go on to win 78-58.
