Game Recap: Men's Soccer | | Danny Talbert

LaGrange Men’s Soccer edged out in CCS Quarterfinals

The #5 Panthers fell 3-1 the #4 Scots of Maryville in the opening round of the CCS Championship Tournament (Oct. 30). Tonight's loss ends the 2024 LC season with an overall record of 4-11-1 (2-5 CCS).

Game Details
The hosts of Maryville opened the game by controlling the ball in their own territory. While this improved the Scots time of possession, it also allowed the Panthers to take advantage of their small mistakes. Senior midfielder William Perry was the first attack, stealing the ball from the Scots and taking a shot that would be blocked. In the seventh minute, forwards Lucas Duke and Olufunmilayo Said both took close range strikes after a Scots pass was taken away. Maryville's offense quickly counterattacked, trading two shots on target. In the 13th minute, the Scots knocked in a goal to put the hosts up 1-0. Seven minutes later, MC snuck a goal in after a long pass to the streaking Scot allowed for a tight shot on the keeper. Both teams continued to set up attacks but nothing came to fruition. MC held a 2-0 lead at the half.

Through the first 45 minutes, Andrew Cole made a pair of saves and Olufunmilayo Said led with three shots.

Despite finding themselves down 2-0, the Panthers continued to battle. In the 58th minute, LC dashed the Scots lead with a spectacular throw-in that defender Dylan DePriest headed towards the net, setting up midfielder Sean Carter with the doorstep goal. This outstanding play had the Panther faithful who made their way to Tennessee on their feet and cheering loudly. After going a man down in the 63rd, LC found themselves backpedaling. Ten minutes later, MC extended their lead to 3-1. In the 78th, LaGrange had back-to-back attempts blocked, but Lucas Duke was quickly able to regain control, launching a fiery shot towards the net, only for it to be saved. Maryville held on to win 3-1.

Tonight's defeat concludes the 2024 LC season with a 4-11-1 (2-5 CCS) record. CCS Men's Soccer All-Conference Teams were announced today (Oct. 30). Click here to see which Panthers were selected.
