Following last week's historic 40-27 victory over Methodist University (Sept. 28), LaGrange College Football looks to secure back-to-back wins for the first time since 2017 with a Saturday showdown against the Scots of Maryville College (Oct. 5). Kickoff in Callaway Stadium is set for 1 p.m. and the fan theme is pink for Breast Cancer Awareness Month. Ticket prices are $10 at the gate and $8 for veterans and active military.

The Scouting Report
The Panthers improved to 1-2 (1-0 USA South) last weekend (Sept. 28), securing Wes Dodson's first win as LC Head Football Coach. Quarterback Henry Brodnax started Panthers victory by putting the Monarchs secondary on notice. On just the second play, the sophomore stepped up and delivered a 62-yard touchdown pass to a streaking Jasharie Anderson. Anderson finished with 101 of Brodnax's 234 passing yards and grabbed one of his two touchdowns passes. Goldman Butler VI scored his first and second touchdowns of the year, finishing with 81 yards on 20 attempts. Linebacker Ched Smith earned USA South Defensive Player and Defensive Rookie of the Week honors for his outstanding performance against MU. He made 7 tackles, 3.5 tackles for a loss and three sacks, with a scoop and score fumble recovery to top it all off. The team finished with five turnovers, the most by the Panthers since 2021. Landon Eaker was named USA South Special Teams Player of the Week after he finished a perfect 2/2 in field goals and 4/4 in extra points.

Through three games, Brodnax completed 32 of his 68 passes for 394 yards, four touchdowns and two interceptions. Anderson leads the team with 145 yards and a pair of touchdowns on seven catches. Butler has carried the rock 47 times this season for 205 yards which averages out to 4.4 yards per attempt.

Desmond Fogle leads the Panthers defense in tackles with 25. Fogle has also grabbed a fumble recovery and secured a tackle for a loss.

The Scots currently hold a 2-1 (1-0 USA South) record after last week's game at Brevard College was postponed due to the disastrous effects of Hurricane Helene. Prior to the first kickoff, the Scots were picked to finish tied for second with Belhaven in the 2024 USA South Head Coaches Preseason Poll, and they have been proving them right. In three games, MC grabbed a 23-9 win over Sewanee University (Sept. 7), dropped their week two matchup 17-14 to a tough Centre College team (Sept. 14), but bounced back with a crushing 54-6 victory against Southern Virginia University (Sept. 21).

The 2023 USA South Rookie of the Year and 2024 First Team All-Conference QB Bryson Rollins picked up from where he left off. The gunslinger out of Elizabethton, Tennessee tallied 830 passing yards, six touchdowns and three interceptions in his three appearances. This comes as no surprise, as the junior racked up 2,500 yards in back-to-back seasons with the Scots. When in the redzone, Rollins has proven throughout his career that he is not afraid to take matters into his own hands, scoring 21 rushing touchdowns while only needing to travel 128 yards total. He has found Steph Carter Jr. 14 times for a team-high 244 yards and one touchdown. Junior running back Griffin Swinea leads the Scots with 120 rushing yards and three touchdowns, averaging a steady 3.3 yards per carry.

Looking at the MC defense, sophomore linebacker Jacob Berven has a team-high 16 tackles while senior linebacker Devon White leads in tackles for a loss with four. As mentioned in the preseason preview, defensive lineman Johnathan Harris is another standout Scot to pay attention to. Currently, he sits with nine tackles and one TFL following a breakout season. Last year, the First Team All-Conference lineman made 38 tackles, nine TFL's, six QB hurries and three sacks. Be on the lookout for no. 1 on defense.
