Panthers Volleyball returns home with tri-match split

The LaGrange College Volleyball Team (7-16) earned a split result in tri-match action Saturday (Oct. 19), losing the first match 3-0 to Asbury University (15-5) and winning the second in straight sets over host Wesleyan College (2-15).

Match One Details
The Panthers were dealt a straight-set loss in the first match against Asbury University. AU got rolling early in the first set with a 10-6 run. LC's efforts to gain competitive position were stifled as the Eagles took a commanding 20-10 lead late in the set. The Panthers were able to get four more points on the scoreboard, but ultimately dropped the opening set 25-14 to go down 1-0 in the match.

The Eagles kept the momentum going in the second stanza, jumping out to a quick 6-0 lead. The Panthers worked their way back, trailing just by three with a 10-7 score. That sadly was as level as the playing field would get between the two teams, as Asbury dominated the remainder of the set to win 25-14 to extend their match lead to 2-0.

LC's struggles continued in the third set, falling behind 7-1 early in the final frame. By the time the Panthers hit double digit points, the Eagles had soared to winning position, leading 20-12 late in the set. LaGrange outscored AU 7-5 to finish the set on a strong note, losing 25-19 and the match 3-0.

Match Two Details
The Panthers controlled a majority of the first set, doubling the Wolves' efforts early and often as they led 10-5. Zentrina Choice led the way with three consecutive service aces and two points off of errors as the visiting Panthers took the first set 25-13.

LC continued to control play in the second set, as they led 10-7 early in the frame. Ella Kahikina, Zentrina Choice and Kaitlin Gilchrist put together a combined 10 kills in the second set as the Panthers won 25-14 to take a 2-0 advantage in the match.

The third set saw one of the most dominant performances of the entire season from LaGrange, as they jumped out to a 10-2 lead to start the set. Claire Titus and Murphy Boyett led the team with three and four kills, respectively, as the Panthers won emphatically 25-9 to sweep the Wolves 3-0.
