Box Score Sophomore captain Blake Webb scored two goals for the LaGrange College men's soccer team during a 3-2 setback in overtime to Maryville Sunday afternoon on Panther Field.
Sophomore goalkeeper Lucas Wright made a game-high eight saves and senior forward Cam Perkins tallied his first collegiate assist for the Panthers (1-2, 1-2 USA South). Alex Sonner scored the game-winner for the Scots (1-3, 1-2 USA South) 1:06 into the first overtime period off a pass down the right attacking side by Caleb Platillero.
"I am happy with the performance and thought we did enough to win," said LaGrange College men's soccer head coach Ryan Dickson. "As I told the student-athletes at the start of the spring season, we are using these six games to prepare for the fall. Even though we did not get the result we wanted, we will learn a lot from this game."
The Panthers opened the scoring in the fourth minute. Webb drew a foul in the 18-yard box, and then buried the penalty kick into the bottom left corner. The Zebulon, Georgia, native leads LC with four goals and nine points on the season.
Sophomore Alex Drazic made some superb defensive plays. On multiple occasions, he broke up the Scots' offensive rush, including a potential breakaway late in the first half. During the 42nd minute, Wright made a tremendous stop in net off a rocket, keeping LC's one-goal cushion intact.
Maryville knotted the game at 1-1 in the 68th minute. Noah Putman won a ball in the box and headed it over to Alonso Angel, who slid a shot into the back of the net.
Platillero dribbled around Wright during the 78th minute and fired a shot into the open net, putting the Scots in front, 2-1.
The Panthers showed resiliency and generated the equalizer with 7:13 remaining in regulation. Webb one-timed a shot into the right side of the net off a header pass by Perkins. Perkins has tallied two goals and one assist, ranking second on the team in points (5) during his first collegiate soccer season.
Each team finished with 21 shots and LaGrange led the corner kicks category, 7-6. Webb finished with a game-high eight shots, putting a team-best three on target. Hernandez recorded five shots. The entire Panther roster was aggressive with nine players tallying at least one shot.
The Panthers are scheduled to play Brevard on Sunday, March 14, at 5 p.m. in Brevard, North Carolina.
