Men's Soccer: Panthers outlast Berea, 5-1, for first win in 2021

Box Score

The LaGrange College men's soccer team received at least one point from six players during a 5-1 triumph over Berea Sunday at Panther Field.

Senior forward Cam Perkins scored for the first time in his collegiate career during a two-goal performance. Sophomore transfer Austin Anderson scored his first goal in a Panther uniform. Sophomore goalkeeper Lucas Wright made five saves and earned his fifth career win for LC (1-1 USA South).

"I am very happy with our attacking play," said LaGrange College men's soccer head coach Ryan Dickson. "We have been working on it all week. I was also happy to give some playing time to a lot of the squad. We still have a lot of growing to do, but we are making positive steps in the right direction."

Blake Webb and Enrique Hernandez continued to impress on the pitch. The two sophomores finished with one goal and one assist apiece. Webb and Hernandez have combined for 13 goals and 14 assists during their time sporting the Red and Black.

Hernandez orchestrated the Panthers' first goal Sunday, swinging the ball over to Webb at the top of the 18-yard box. Webb blasted a shot into the bottom left corner of the net 1:19 into regulation. During the 10th minute, Webb played the role of facilitator, as Perkins one-timed his pass into the bottom right corner for a 2-0 advantage.

"We were very happy with the result today," said Webb. "We had been working hard over the last two weeks hoping to bounce back after the Huntingdon game. We did just that. Most of our goals came from things that we had been working on in practice, so to implement those sequences into the game is fantastic. We will keep working hard and look forward to our next game against Maryville."

Sophomore forward Jaydon Parrish sent a pass to Perkins in the box. Perkins ran in front of the Berea goalkeeper and tipped the ball into the back of the net from point-blank range, pushing the Panthers' advantage to 3-0 with 23:41 remaining.

LC started to run away with the game in the second half. Hernandez scored on a free kick in the 59th minute.

Anderson scored on a breakaway in the 65th minute. Freshman Satchel Hart picked up his first college assist by catching Anderson in stride with a perfect through ball from the midfield line. Juan Mercado scored in the 72nd minute for the Mountaineers (0-2 USA South).

The Panthers led the shots category, 22-12, and held a 7-4 advantage in corner kicks. Hernandez recorded a game-high five shots and Webb showcased great accuracy, putting all four of his shots on target.

LC has defeated Berea in five consecutive seasons. The Panthers defeated the visiting Mountaineers, 4-2, on Panther Field in 2019. During the 2018 season, LaGrange won, 2-1, in double overtime at Berea.

The Panthers are scheduled to play Maryville on Sunday, March 7, at Panther Field, starting at 3 p.m.
