Men's Soccer: Panthers honor four seniors in 4-1 setback to Huntingdon

Box Score

Sophomore midfielder Blake Webb scored his sixth collegiate goal for the LaGrange College men's soccer team during a 4-1 setback to Huntingdon on Saturday at Callaway Stadium.

"I am disappointed with the result, but happy that we played a competitive game even though it was a long time since our last one," said LaGrange College men's soccer head coach Ryan Dickson. "This squad is talented and young. We will have many growing pains like we did on Saturday. I have a great amount of belief that this squad will grow into a fantastic team over the next few months."

Prior to Saturday's game, LC (0-1, 0-1 USA South) paid tribute to four outstanding seniors in Andrew Valbuena, Michael Deese, Ryan Mabee and Cam Perkins.

HOW IT HAPPENED:

Hunter Hall scored a hat trick in the first half for Huntingdon (2-0, 1-0 USA South). He opened the scoring in the 12th minute.

The Panthers knotted the game at 1-1 during the 19th minute. Sophomore forward Enrique Hernandez made a crafty pass to Webb on the right side of the 18-yard box. Webb rifled an in-close shot with a great deal of velocity by the goalkeeper.

Hall scored in the 24th and 45th minute, sending the Hawks into halftime with a 3-1 advantage. A free-kick goal by Kelan LeBlanc of Huntingdon ended the scoring in the 64th minute.

SENIOR SPOTLIGHT:

Valbuena is a four-year Panther. He was a freshman on the first team in program history to reach the USA South tournament in 2017.

Deese is a four-year LC soccer player and qualified for the conference playoffs in each of his first three seasons.

Mabee always puts the team's success over any personal accolades. He has pushed his teammates to be the best version of themselves in practice and on game day.

Perkins is in his first year on the men's soccer team after suiting up for the football program in 2018 and 2019. During his time on the gridiron, the quarterback threw for 852 yards and seven TDs. He rushed 61 times for 301 yards and six TDs.

INSIDE THE NUMBERS:

LaGrange led the shots category, 21-15. The Panthers generated some quality scoring opportunities with double-digit shot totals in both halves.

Hernandez finished with a game-high 10 shots. Perkins put 3-of-4 shots on target and Webb sent 2-of-3 shots on net.

BEYOND THE BOX SCORE:

Webb and Hernandez picked up where they left off during their rookie seasons. The two combined for 10 goals, 11 assists and 31 points in 2019.

Webb was a two-time USA South Rookie of the Week selection and was tied for fifth in the conference in assists with eight in 2019.

UP NEXT:

The Panthers are scheduled to play Berea on Sunday, Feb. 28, with an 11:30 a.m. start at Panther Field.
