Men's Soccer: Panthers score first during 2-1 overtime loss to Brevard

Box Score

Freshman midfielder Blake Webb of the LaGrange College men's soccer team buried a penalty-kick goal in the 34th minute, but visiting Brevard responded with a pair of unanswered goals during a 2-1 overtime win at Panther Field on Saturday evening.

HOW IT HAPPENED:

  • The Panthers (3-5-1, 2-2-1 USA South) had a strong scoring bid in the 13th minute, as freshman midfielder Enrique Hernandez sent a crisp pass over to senior midfielder Errick Sturm. Sturm located a sprinting Evan Sampers on the edge of the box, but LaGrange was charged with being offside.
  • During the 34th minute, Webb wreaked havoc in the box, as his extended possession resulted in a penalty against the Tornados (1-4-2, 1-1-2 USA South). Webb buried a penalty-kick goal from 12 yards out into the bottom-left corner, giving the Panthers a 1-0 advantage.
  • Panthers freshman goalkeeper Lucas Wright made a tremendous diving save on a free kick by Joao Monteiro with 9:22 remaining in the opening half, and then with 5:32 on the clock, Wright made a point-blank stop on a header attempt by Matheus Masukawa.
  • Freshman defender Bryson Gordy came up with a big-time block on a shot from inside the 18-yard box by JP Suarti 6:09 into the second half. With 33 minutes remaining in regulation, Gordy poked the ball away from Vinicius Giannaccini on the edge of the box.
  • Brevard found the equalizer in the 64th minute, as Masukawa picked the top-left corner on a free kick from just beyond the box, evening the score at 1-1.
  • Lucas Campos recorded the game-winning tally 1:56 into the first-overtime session, converting a shot from point-blank range off a long throw-in by Jackson Riddle.

INSIDE THE NUMBERS:

  • Wright (2-3-1) finished with a game-high nine saves, while each team attempted four corner kicks.
  • The Tornados held a 25-8 advantage in shots and an 11-4 edge in shots on goal.
  • Webb finished with three shots, including two on target, while freshman forward Jaydon Parish also attempted three shots.
  • Webb leads the Panthers in points (8) and assists (4), as the four assists are tied for the sixth most in the USA South.

UP NEXT:

  • The Panthers will be on the road for their next three USA South games, as they will make the journey to Demorest, Georgia, on Tuesday for a 5 p.m. showdown against Piedmont.
