Men's Soccer: Freshmen power Panthers past Huntingdon in USA South opener

Freshmen Levi Gehman and Errick Sturm powered LaGrange to a 4-2 win over visiting Huntingdon at Panther Field on Saturday. The match was the USA South conference opener for both teams.

Gehman and Sturm each scored two goals, while sophomore Miguel Martinez had two assists for the Panthers (3-3, 1-0 USA South). 

The Panthers built a 3-0 lead in a six minute span in the first half. Sturm took a through ball from Martinez to open the scoring in the 23rd minute. Gehman, with an assist from Daniel Province, headed in a shot for his first collegiate goal two minutes later. Sturm closed out the first half scoring with a goal similar to his first with another assist from Martinez.

In the second half, Huntingdon (1-3-1, 0-1 USA South) got two goals from Brendon Van Emelen in a 25 second span to make it 3-2.

Gehman answered for the Panthers three minutes after Van Emelen's second goal. Martinez fired a shot toward goal that was knocked down by keeper Dakota Gruzdas. Gehman put the rebound into the net to make it 4-2.

The Panthers host Maryville in a USA South match next Friday at 4 p.m.
