MONTGOMERY, Ala.- LaGrange capped a perfect season opening day  with a 3-2 comeback win over Mississippi College at the Huntingdon College Volleyball Jubilee on Friday. The Panthers (2-0) started their season with a 3-0 victory over host Huntingdon.

Freshman Katie Chancellor paced the Panthers' attack with 27 kills in the two matches. Senior Hayley LaFontaine and freshman Megan Lee each had 14 kills.

Freshmen Aspen Coggins and Delaney James combined for 55 assists on the day, with James leading the way with 28. Sophomore Ella Weymiller had a team-best 26 digs.

In the Mississippi College match, the Panthers took the first two sets; 25-16 and 25-22. The Lady Choctaws forced a deciding fifth set with 25-18 and 25-20 wins in the third and fourth sets.

The Lady Choctaws led 13-10 in the final set and were two points from winning the match. The Panthers responded by taking the final five points.

Chancellor served up an ace to make it 13-12. An attack error by the Lady Choctaws off a block by senior Leslie Rhoades tied it at 13. After another attack error gave the Panthers the lead, Rhoades closed out the match with a kill off an assist from Coggins.

Chancellor had a match-high 15 kills for the Panthers. Megan Lee added another 10 kills. Four Panthers, led by Sterling Ancrum's 17, had double figures in digs.

The Panthers defeated the host Lady Hawks 25-23, 25-22 and 25-20 in the first match of the season. Chancellor had 12 kills in her collegiate debut.

Huntingdon led 23-22 in the first set. But the Panthers took the set after a service error and two straight attack errors by the Lady Hawks.

The Panthers never trailed in the second set. Huntingdon got within a point twice late in the set, but Chancellor had a kill and an attack error by the Lady Hawks gave the set to the Panthers.

The Lady Hawks held a 20-18 lead in the third set. The Panthers ran off seven straight unanswered points to take the set and the match. Chancellor, Coggins, Lee and Rhoades all had kills during the final run.

The Panthers continue play in the tournament Saturday against Birmingham-Southern and Agnes Scot.
