Panthers fend off late rally to take game three against Piedmont

DEMOREST, Ga. - The LaGrange College Baseball Team (15-18, 7-5 Collegiate Conference of the South) notched their 15th victory of the season on Sunday afternoon (April. 13), besting the Lions of Piedmont University (21-10, 8-4 CCS) on the road by a final score of 5-3.

Game Summary
After the Lions had narrowly secured the series victory by edging LaGrange in come-from-behind fashion in the first two games, the visitors in Red and Black knew they were well-due to pick up an elusive win. Just like in games two and three, LC again got off to a quick start as David Smigelski scored Jackson McElvy with an RBI single. After Curt Bonner added a second run to the total for the Panthers, Tray Owens stepped up to bat. The senior out Franklin, Ga laid complete waste on a Peyton Irvin sinker as he blasted a two-run homer to give his team a controlling 4-0 lead in the fourth.

After seven dominant innings of two-run ball from Trystin Merson, it was time for the Panthers to finish off one of the conference's top teams. The Lions were able to get their bats going in the bottom of the ninth, making it a 5-3 ballgame late. With a runner on second and the tying run at the plate, sophomore RHP Chandler Walker was able to force a line out and capture his squad's 15th victory of the season.

Panthers of the Game
Merson picked up the win on the mound for LC, striking out five batters and allowing just two earned runs and one walk.

Owens proved to be the hero for the Panthers, scoring the game-winning run with his two-run blast in the fourth inning.
