LaGRANGE, Ga. -
Cannon Ramsey and
Zoe Veres each hit grand slams to power LaGrange to a pair of 10-2 run-rule wins over visiting Gordon State College on a chilly Thursday afternoon at the LC Softball Complex. The Panthers evened their season record at 11-11 with the sweep of the Highlanders (10-18).
Game 1: LaGrange had 13 hits in the opener as every starter had at least one hit.
Jenna Yeary (5-2) pitched a complete game, scattering seven hits over six innings, allowing the two runs but only one was earned. She walked two and struck out five.
The Panthers loaded the bases with one out on three walks issued by Gordon starter Kaylee MacDonald. Ramsey sent a drive over the left field fence for a quick 4-0 lead. It was Ramsey's third home run of the season.
LC upped its lead to 6-0 in the third inning.
Kayla Helms and Kenzi Hornsby had back-to-back RBI singles in the inning. The Panthers tacked on three more runs in the fourth inning.
Claire Chamberlain scored on a wild pitch for the first run. Helms drove in the next run with a single and the final run came home when Hornsby was hit by a pitch with the bases loaded.
Leading 9-2, the Panthers ended the game on the run-rule in the sixth inning. With two out, LC loaded the bases on three straight hits.
Jaselyn Couch beat out an infield hit to drive in Hornsby from third with the game-ending run.
Game 2: Veres ended the second game with her grand slam in the fifth inning. The home run was Veres' third of the season, tying Ramsey for the team lead. In the inning, the Panthers loaded the bases on back-to-back hits by
Breonn Newbille and Couch, then a walk to Chamberlain. Veres followed with her blast to center field off reliever Emilee Zetmeir for the 10-2 final score.
Gordon took a 2-0 lead off Panther starter
Lily Rae Fulford (2-3) in the first inning. The Highlanders had three hits in the inning and an LC error led to an unearned run. Fulford shut out the Highlanders over the next four innings, allowing only four hits.
The Panthers sent 10 batters to the plate during a four-run rally in the third inning. Veres' base hit to left drove in the first run. Helms reached on a fielder's choice as Chamberlain came home with the tying run. Hornsby was a by a pitch and Newbille walked with the bases loaded to force in two more runs and a 4-2 lead. Helms' two-out two-run single in the fourth increased LC's lead to 6-2.
