LC Softball falls in doubleheader Saturday to Berry College

MOUNT BERRY, Ga - The LaGrange College Softball team (0-2) dropped a doubleheader on Saturday (Feb. 8) to the Vikings of Berry College (2-0) by respective scores of 3-0 and 12-4 in five innings. This was the opening weekend for both teams, as the Panther splits an exhibition doubleheader earlier in the week with the Skyhawks of Point University.

Game One Recap
The contest started scoreless, with LC missing an opportunity to score with runners on second and third in the top of the third inning. A Berry onslaught of three runs in the bottom of the frame quickly broke the stalemate. The game remained there throughout, with LaGrange struggling to muster any kind of offense. In the top of the 5th, the Panthers' third baseman Kayla Helms got all the way to third via an error, fielders choice and a wild pitch, but the chance faded quickly and by the end, LC fell.

Game Two Recap
Berry came out firing in the latter half of the doubleheader, scoring three runs in the first three innings. Shortstop Cannon Ramsey scored on a passed ball in the top of the fourth to cut the Viking lead to two, but two more Berry runs in the bottom half of the inning opened their lead up to four. The Panthers fought back, responding with three runs in the top of fourth. LC was able to get the Vikings to take starting pitcher Ava Fouts out of the contest during the LC run barrage. As the game entered the bottom of the fifth, LaGrange only trailed 5-4. The Vikings proceeded to score seven runs before the Panthers could get out of the frame, finishing in a run-rule fashion to end it for LC.

Panther of the Game
Junior utility player Claire Chamberlin shined in both games for LC. In game one, the former Conference Rookie of the Year pitched her 24th career complete game, going six innings strong. The Rome, Ga native gave up only three runs on seven hits, with one of those hits being extra bases. She also struck out two and walked one.
In game two, she played second for LC, assisting on two outs with no errors. She also went one for two at the plate, picking up her first RBI and run of the season.
