Brodnax Lights Up Knights as Football Sweeps USA South

BUENA VISTA, Va. – Junior quarterback Henry Brodnax (Newnan, Ga.) threw for 423 yards and six touchdowns as the LaGrange College football team won 65-27 at Southern Virginia University in USA South Athletic Conference action on Saturday at Knight Stadium in Buena Vista, Virginia.

With the win, the Panthers have completed their conference schedule with a perfect 7-0 record, their first time achieving that feat since the 2008 season. Having already secured at least a share of the USA South Championship with the victory over Belhaven last week, LaGrange has officially claimed the conference championship outright, also their first title since 2008.

THE BIG PLAYS
  • On the Panthers' second drive of the game, Brodnax found senior wide receiver Ashton Bryant (Athens, Ga.) on the left side and the receiver escaped for an 81 yard touchdown. That would set the table for career days for both players as the first three of Brodnax's six touchdowns were to Bryant to put the Panthers up 20-0 with 11:01 left in the second quarter.
  • With 1:37 remaining in the second quarter, Brodnax hit freshman wide receiver Aaron Bryant (Homerville, Ga.) for a 56-yard touchdown as LaGrange would go into halftime leading 37-7.     
INSIDE THE NUMBERS
  • Brodnax set career highs in passing with 423 yards and six passing touchdowns, having completed 17 of 25 passes on the day. His six scores in the air were tied for the second-most all-time in LaGrange history.
  • Ashton Bryant's three touchdown catches tied a LaGrange record, as he went on to catch four passes totaling 128 yards on the day. Aaron Bryant recorded three catches for 121 yards and two touchdowns, as well as returning three kick returns for another 71 yards.
  • LaGrange freshman quarterback Kirk Scott (Richmond Hill, Ga.) rushed for 30 yards and two touchdowns playing out of the option.              
  • The Panthers combined for 223 rushing yards on 40 attempts, with junior running back Michael Hays (Jacksonville, Fla.) leading the way with 96 yards off twelve attempts, averaging 8.0 yards per rush.
  • The Panther defense dominated for much of the game, holding the Knights to a combined negative 15 yards rushing. Junior linebacker Dezmond Jones (Thomasville, Ga.) and freshman defensive lineman Zymarion Hudson (Cordele, Ga.) each finished with a sack.
  • LaGrange sophomore defensive back Brandon Brooks (Davenport, Fla.) had an interception with 3:14 remaining in the third quarter that he returned for a pick six. senior defensive back Deon King Jr. (Vienna, Ga.) also completed his outstanding senior regular season with an interception to go along with three tackles including one for a loss. Sophomore cornerback Tavares Simmons Jr. (Perry, Ga.) had a team-high seven tackles.

  • LaGrange now awaits word of their opponent in the first round of the NCAA Tournament with the selection show being held on Sunday at 5:00 p.m.
