Panthers Volleyball heads to Jackson, Miss. to face Belhaven University (1-6) and Millsaps College (11-1) this Saturday (Sept. 21). The Panthers' matchup against the Blazers marks the first in-conference game of the season for both teams.
The Teams
The Panthers are currently 3-6 after dropping four road matches over the weekend (Sept. 13-14) against tough Old Dominion Athletic Conference competition. Through nine matches played, LC averages a 1.22 attack percentage with nine assists, 10.3 kills and 15.5 digs per set. Leading the way in points for the Panthers is freshman phenom
Ella Kahikina. Through 31 sets, the Tampa, Fla. native scored 124.5 points and posted a solid average of 4.02 points and 3.32 kills per set.
Belhaven is 1-6 following a four-game losing skid. Through seven games, the Blazers average a .094 attack percentage with eight assists, 9.1 kills and 13 digs per set. Through 21 sets played, outside hitter Emma Gardner leads the team with 47.5 points with a BU-high 2.26 points and 1.95 kills per set. Belhaven will take on Tougaloo College prior to this weekend (Sept. 18).Â
The Millsaps Majors are on a roll so far this season, going 11-1 with their lone loss coming in game one against Howard Payne University (Aug. 30). MC, out of the Southern Athletic Conference, averages a solid .178 attack percentage with six assists, 12.5 kills and an impressive 19.8 digs per set. In 43 sets, outside hitter Anna Capezzera secured a total of 180 points, averaging a stellar 4.19 points and 3.58 kills per set.
Players to Watch
In this weekend's matches, pay attention to how the Panthers start in the opening set. LC is coming off of a four-loss weekend which can affect any team's level of excitement. Whether the Panthers come out flat-footed or firing on all cylinders will affect the first match's outcome.Â
