Game Details
Offense
First half
Despite some tough treading in the first, Henry Brodnax showed great composure following a pick six. After this interception, Brodnax and Co. responded with a 44-yard touchdown pass to Jasharie Anderson. NAIA school Saint Andrews University was unable to score against the Trojans first team defense (their game was also reduced to 12-minute quarters). Many of the Panthers' offensive problems were caused by AU's relentless pressure. At times, Brodnax was forced to throw the ball away to prevent giving up a sack. At halftime, he was 5 for 12 with one touchdown and an interception. Anderson was the lone Panther to score this half and Goldman Butler VI gained 41 rushing yards on eight carries (4.8 yards per attempt).
Second half
LC started the second half moving the sticks thanks to a solid pass by Brodnax followed by a first down rush by Butler. This drive ended prematurely after a holding call pushed the Panthers back. As time expired in the third, LC rotated Brodnax out for Rashod Brockington. AU began switching out players on both sides of the ball around this time too (some starters remained in for both teams). During his second series, Brockington threw a superb 33-yard touchdown pass over the Trojan defender.
Defense
First half
Following a big AU touchdown play in the opening drive, the LC defense woke up. In the second Trojans series, the Panthers made a huge stop to hold AU to a field goal. The Trojans secured this field position after QB Tyler Wesley threw a deep pass right into the arms of his tight end. The defense was in great position, but outstanding ball placement prevented LC from making a play on it. In the next AU series, the defense forced the Trojan's first team offense into their first ever three and out. SAU was unable to stop AU last week. Despite the Trojans driving down the field in the next series, the Panthers prevented AU from adding any points. AU took a 30-7 lead at the break following a touchdown pass on the final drive. Through two quarters, Nemo Ceasar led the defense with seven tackles and three tackles for a loss.
Second half
In the first AU drive, the hosts moved the rock into the LC redzone after the Trojans completed a deep ball. The Panthers DB was step-for-step with the speedy wide-out, but another great pass by Wesley fell right into the Trojans' hands. One thing that stood out about the defense was how hard they were tackling. Chris Jonas and Desmond Fogle made multiple huge hits that left the Trojans stumbling. Once the talented AU quarterback left the game, the Trojans struggled to do anything against the Panthers. Both Jonas and Fogle finished with a team-high nine tackles. The defense had 11 tackles for a loss.
Special Teams
Brandon Matson had another big night punting. The week one USA South Special Teams Player of the Week finished with a 41.9 punt average with one inside the 20 and another traveling over 50 yards. If you take away the late LC fumble, the return teams looked solid for the second week in a row. This group averaged just over 20 yards per return.
Up Next
The Panthers are on a bye next week prior to kicking off conference play against Methodist University at home (Sept. 28).
