LaGrange College Football secures statement win

A last-minute touchdown drive led by Henry Brodnax lifted LaGrange past Huntingdon College 24-21, clinching the Panthers' fourth consecutive USA South win (Nov. 11). This victory improved the Panthers record to 5-3 (5-1 USA South), which ties the single-season conference win record set in 2013.

Game Details
First Half
Offense

The LC offense started today's game using a heavy Goldman Butler VI rushing attack. In the first quarter, the Panthers were able to move the ball to midfield but could not advance it any further. The opening signs of LC offensive success happened during the Panthers' two-minute drive. LaGrange moved the ball into the Hawks territory using a mix of passes to Jasharie Anderson and rushes by Goldman Butler VI. Out of a Panthers timeout, Henry Brodnax found Ashton Bryant open with a strong 18-yard pass to set LC up with a new set of downs in the Hawks redzone. With 17 seconds remaining in the half, Rashod Brockington equalized the game on a patient three-yard rushing touchdown. The game was locked up at 7-7 at the half. Sophomore quarterback Henry Brodnax finished 4-of-11 in passing for 49 yards. Senior wideout Jasharie Anderson caught a team-high two passes for 14 yards, while junior receiver Ashton Bryant led with 18 yards on his one grab. Senior running back Goldman Butler VI rushed for 94 yards on 22 carries (4.3 average).

Defense
The Panthers opened the away game like the Alabama weather today, hot. LaGrange quickly forced the Hawks into a pair of three-and-outs after the hosts' passes continued to connect with the ground. On an early Hawks series, defensive back Deon King Jr. had the crowd on their feet when he delivered a crushing third down sack. On their hosts' following possession, the Hawks again were stuffed on third down with a sack, this time by linebacker Dezmond Jones and defensive end Denver Griffis. The first quarter ended locked up at 0-0 with HC moving the ball into LaGrange territory. The Hawks finished the drive empty-handed following an LC field goal block. With five minutes remaining in the half, a 37-yard Hawks pass set the hosts up with their first touchdown of the day. At the break, the game was tied at 7-7. Senior defensive back Deon King Jr. finished with a team-high three tackles and one sack. Through two quarters, the Hawks were held to 101 yards with only 30 coming on the ground.

Second Half
Offense

Following a defensive fourth down stop, the LC offense opened the half at midfield. The Panthers quickly reverted to the rushing attack, using both Goldman Butler VI and Tenacious Taylor to move the chains. This heavy run game lolled the Hawks defensive backs to sleep, setting up a beautiful 49-yard Brodnax touchdown pass to Jasharie Anderson to give LC a 14-7 lead with ten minutes remaining in the third quarter. On the next offensive series, the Panthers quickly drove the ball down the field thanks to an incredible one-handed sideline catch made by Ashton Bryant. Before the Hawks defense could settle in, Brodnax dropped another exceptional pass right into the arms of Bryant at the Hawks 10. This set up a Landon Eaker field goal to extend the LC lead to 17-7 at the end of the third quarter. With under two minutes left in the game, Brodnax and Co. found themselves down 21-17 with the ball. This series started at midfield thanks to a 38-yard Aubrey Carter kick return. Following a first down Butler rush, LaGrange had the hosts scrambling to slow the attack as time ticked. With 20 seconds remaining, Brodnax delivered Huntingdon the knockout blow, finding Ashton Bryant with a 15-yard touchdown pass to put the Panthers up 24-21.

Defense
The LC defense started the second half with their backs against the wall after a wobbly punt set HC up on the Panthers 45. Despite this great field position and a fourth down try, the Hawks were again sent packing without gaining a first down. Under two minutes remaining in the third quarter, the Hawks cut the LC lead to 17-14 on a pair of substantial passing plays. The next HC series started on the LaGrange side of the field following a blocked punt. LC quickly stole the ball back after Keyon Stoutemire jumped the Hawks route, securing his fourth interception of the season. With six minutes remaining, the Panthers defense returned to the field, looking to prevent the hosts from grabbing a last minute lead. Despite the Panthers' best efforts, the hosts strung together a nine-play four-minute drive to go up 21-17 with under two remaining. Following an excellent LaGrange touchdown drive, the Panthers held a tight 24-21 late lead, putting all the pressure on the defense to make a stop. Using short passes, the Hawks were able to move the ball onto the LC side of the field, but it was too little too late. As time expired, LaGrange and the Panther faithful who made the trip to Alabama watched as the HC quarterback sailed the final pass out of the back of the endzone along with the Hawks' hopes of securing a win against LaGrange College. LC won 24-21.

Overall
Offense

Goldman Butler VI is a workhorse. The senior running back carried the ball a whopping 40 times today for 171 yards. What is so remarkable about this feat is that despite Huntingdon and everyone in attendance knowing Butler would get the ball, the back still brutalized the Hawks with 4.3 yards per carry. When LaGrange went to the air, sophomore QB Henry Brodnax delivered. Brodnax completed 16 of his 29 passes (55%) for 205 yards and two touchdowns. Not only did Brodnax run a successful two-minute touchdown drive to cap off the first half, the young shot caller conducted a six-play 80-second game winning drive that ended with a clutch touchdown pass to junior wide receiver Ashton Bryant. The wideout from Athens, Georgia put together another impressive performance in the road victory. Bryant grabbed a team-high seven catches for 106 yards and the game winning touchdown. Senior Jasharie Anderson trailed slightly behind Bryant with six catches for 99 yards and a touchdown.

Defense
If you take away some of the big passing plays, Huntingdon really struggled to do anything against the Panthers defense. While the hosts finished with a solid 309 total yards, it felt like the Hawks playbook was limited to the passing game due to their inability to gain any success on the ground. HC finished with just 57 rushing yards on 19 attempts. The Panthers extended their turnover streak to five games thanks to a fourth quarter Keyon Stoutemire interception. Freshman linebacker Ched Smith led the team with six tackles and senior defensive back Deon King Jr. accounted for team-high one sack in addition to his three tackles.

Specials
Junior kicker Landon Eaker finished a perfect 3/3 on extra points and knocked in a 25-yard field goal.

Next up
The Panthers travel to Mississippi to take on Belhaven University next Saturday at 1 p.m. (Nov. 9).
