The Scouting ReportÂ
The Panthers improved to 4-3 (4-1 USAS) last weekend (Oct. 26) after securing a 52-16 Homecoming win over Greensboro College. This victory extended the LC winning streak to three for the first time since 2009.Â
Through seven games, sophomore QB Henry Brodnax has gone 101-for-184 (55%) in passing for 1,165 yards, 8 touchdowns and five interceptions. Like Waffle House, junior Ashton Bryant always seems to be open every time you need him. The Athens, Georgia native has grabbed a team-high 32 catches for 355 yards and two touchdowns. Senior wide receiver Jasharie Anderson trails slightly behind Bryant with 20 catches, but leads the team with 367 yards and four touchdowns. Senior running back Goldman Butler VI is the go-to option for the Panthers rushing attack. In seven games, Butler carried the ball 136 times for 552 yards and six touchdowns, breaking his single-season scoring record of five. Every time the bruising running back totes the rock, he averages a steady 4 yards per carry.
The Panthers defense picked up from where they left off, causing havoc for opposing offenses. In last week's win over GC (Oct. 26), LaGrange held the Pride to under 200 total yards with just 30 coming on the ground. The Panthers continued their five-game turnover streak thanks to sophomore Keyon Stoutemire securing his third interception of the year. The Panthers have made eight picks and eight fumble recoveries this season with Stoutemire leading the way with his three. In seven starts, graduate student linebacker Desmond Fogle made a team-high 53 tackles in addition to securing five tackles for a loss, one sack and a fumble recovery. Fogle's ability to make open field tackles, crushing ones at that, is second to none around the USA South. Leading LaGrange in TFL (8.5) and sacks (4) is freshman linebacker Ched Smith.Â
Despite Belhaven University winning the conference championship in 2023, do not get it twisted, for almost a decade the USA South has run through Montgomery, Alabama. Since 2015, Head Coach Mike Turk and the Huntingdon Hawks have won seven of the past nine conference championships. Following a 3-0 start in conference play, the Hawks stumbled into a two-game USA South losing skid, falling to Maryville (Oct. 19) and Brevard (Oct. 26). This has brought the HC record to 3-4 (3-2 USAS).
At quarterback for the Hawks this season is junior Dorian Smith. In five games, Smith completed 71 of his 119 passes (60%) for 927 yards, 10 touchdowns and four interceptions. His top two targets this season is junior halfback Brody Covington and senior wideout RJ White. Both caught a team-high five touchdowns, with White leading the unit in yards with 281 to Covington's 210. Running the ball for this Hawks this year is senior Troy Garner and sophomore Rayshawn Williams. On 108 carries, Garner leads the team with 434 rushing yards and five touchdowns. Williams has gained 343 yards and three touchdowns on 58 attempts.
Looking at the HC defense, the unit has tallied five interceptions and four fumble recoveries, each caused by a different Hawk. Sophomore linebacker Braylon Miller posted a team-high 40 tackles with 5.5 TFL and 2.5 sacks. The Hawks also returned 2023 First Team All-Conference Defensive lineman Robert Vickers. In seven games, Vickers has only made 13 tackles and 2.5 TFL, but look out for no. 7 on defense because he can be a game wrecker.
