LC Football drops Callaway clash

The Panthers were delivered a 38-13 defeat by the Scots of Maryville College at home (Oct. 5). The team is on the road facing off against N.C. Wesleyan next Saturday (Oct. 12).

First half
Offense

In the final minutes of the opening quarter, the LC offense scored the first points of the day on a 37-yard Landon Eaker field goal. This series was set up on the LaGrange 40 thanks to a Panthers pick. On the following possession, LC controlled the ball with a four-minute drive, but was prevented from moving past the Maryville 40. Henry Brodnax found success in this series by hitting Ashton Bryant on quick passes. The final LC drive of the half was capped off by a 50-yard Eaker field goal. Through the first, Brodnax finished 8-16 for 63 yards, Ashton Bryant grabbed a team-high six catches for 54 yards and Goldman Butler VI totaled 26 rushing yards.

Defense
The LC defense started today picking up from where they left off, forcing turnovers. On the Scots second series, a tipped ball was intercepted by Jaden Sanders. The Panthers kept MC out of the endzone to finish the first quarter up 3-0, but the high-powered Scots offense opened the second with a 10-yard touchdown pass. After Maryville's fourth-down defensive stop, LC answered with one of their own, using a blitz to force pressure and an incomplete pass. On the final drive of the half, MC moved the ball into the LaGrange redzone but was kept to just a field goal. The Scots led 10-6 at the break. Desmond Fogle finished with a team-high six tackles.

Second half
Offense

The offense started the second half struggling to move the ball. In the third quarter, the group went three and out on three consecutive possessions. The fourth began with another three and out by the offense after the Panthers passing plays could not be hauled in. Following a fumbled kick return, LC began their next drive inside their own five, which prevented the team from setting up anything substantial. The offense remained scoreless in the second half until they strung together a solid final series. The Panthers scored the lone LC touchdown of today on a two-yard pass from Brodnax to Johnathan Lampkin.

Defense
The LC defense opened the second half forcing a Scots three and out. On the following MC possession, the visitors drove the ball down the field to go up 17-6. The Scots garnered this success by running the rock on five of their six plays. On the next drive, the talented MC quarterback found an open receiver downfield to set up another touchdown. LC trailed 24-6 through three. MC started the fourth quarter with a 45-yard passing touchdown to go up 31-6. Despite letting up back-to-back scores on two previous possessions, the LC defense stepped up and stopped the Scots on their next drive. MC scored one more time, going on to secure a 38-13 win over the Panthers.
