The LaGrange College Volleyball Team (7-20) came home empty-handed Wednesday night (Oct. 29) after a 3-1 loss to the Tuskegee Golden Tigers (9-13) on the road.
Match Details
Both teams proved to be evenly matched in the first set, tied 10-10 early in the contest. After falling slightly behind 16-18 late in the set, the Panthers were unable to overcome a handful of untimely attack errors paired with timely kills from Tuskegee OH Lauren Canady as they dropped the first set 25-18.
Riding the momentum from the first set, the Golden Tigers jumped out to a 9-2 lead in the second set. The Panthers were able to rally against the early deficit, as they clawed their way back to an even affair with a 15-15 score late in the set. After grabbing the lead twice, LC could not stop a persistent Tuskegee squad who continued to respond and eventually overcame the visitors' resolve to win the set 25-20, now leading the match 2-0.
With the match on the line, LaGrange dug their heels into the proverbial ground to force a potential fourth set in the third stanza. That effort initially did not go according to plan, down 10-3 early. Seemingly on the brink of their fifth loss in as many matches, they jockeyed their way back into position inch by inch until finally they were able to tie the set 22-22 late. Both teams traded scores in back-to-back fashion, as the win-by-two rule came into effect with a 24-24 draw late into the action. Speaking of back-to-back scores,
Kaitlin Gilchrist and
Zentrina Choice delivered the two necessary points to force a fourth set for the Panthers, stunning the entire James Center Arena crowd of nearly a hundred Golden Tigers faithful with the 26-24 win, now trailing by just 2-1.
With fresh momentum and motivation on their side, LC put their best foot forward in the fourth set as they held a slight advantage leading 10-9 early in the frame. Just as it seemed they were beginning to roll with three-point leads on two separate occasions, the hosts Tuskegee eventually began to roll themselves as they jumped to a 20-17 lead late in the set. Although game to take the Golden Tigers to the limit once again, the Panthers could not survive the firepower of Tuskegee stars Lauren Canady and Taylor Coleman as they dropped the final set 25-20 and the match 3-1.
