Football: Late comeback falls short as Greensboro edges Panthers 37-35 in USA South opener

GREENSBORO, N.C. - Greensboro held off a late rally by LaGrange for a 37-35 win in the USA South opener for both teams.

The Panthers (2-1) and the Pride (1-2) combined for 1,000 yards of total offense in the game. The Panthers had a season-high 516 yards of offense.

Senior quarterback Graham Craig threw for four touchdowns for the third straight game. He finished with 373 yards passing; completing 40-of-60 passes.

Ervens Oge had 121 yards receiving on eight catches and a touchdown. Michael Gray had two touchdown catches in his five receptions.

The Panthers scored on their first two possessions of the game. They took the opening kickoff and drove 75 yards in 13 plays to go up 7-0. Craig finished the drive with a short 2-yard touchdown pass to Oge.

After taking over on downs at the Pride 10 on their next possession, the Panthers needed only one play to go up 14-0. Gray scored on Craig's second touchdown pass to finish the short drive.

Greensboro came back to tie the game at 14 at the end of the first quarter and took a 21-14 lead in the second quarter.

The Panthers drove 73 yards in only six plays to tie the game at 21. Isaac Dixon's 38-yard run to the 4-yard line, set up Craig's touchdown toss to Griffin Roelle on the next play.

Greensboro answered with a scoring drive to take a 28-21 lead at halftime.

Trailing 31-21 in the third quarter, the Panthers closed the gap to three points. Craig led the Panthers on a 10-play 65 yard drive, completing 7-of-7 passes on the drive. Sequoh Humes scored from the 6 to cap the drive.

After falling behind 37-28, the Panthers once again drew closer. They needed only 59 seconds to travel 88 yards to trail by only two points.

Craig hooked up with Oge on a 32-yard reception on the second play of the drive. Two plays later, he found Gray for a 41-yard touchdown to make it 37-35 with 2:24 left.

The Panthers were unable to get the ball back as Greensboro ran out the clock to hold on for the victory.

The Panthers host Averett next Saturday in a USA South game. Kickoff is 1 p.m.
