NEWPORT NEWS, Va. - Christopher Newport outlasted LaGrange 45-26 in a USA South game Saturday. The loss left the Panthers 4-5 overall and 2-5 in conference play.

Sophomore Ervens Oge and senior Griffin Roelle set school records in the game. Oge became the school's career leader in receiving yards with 1,317. He had six catches for 66 yards in the game.

Roelle, with six receptions, broke his own single-season record of 59 set last season. He had six in the game and has 61 for the season.

Quarterback Graham Craig threw for 343 yards and a 28-yard touchdown pass to Josh Hardrick. Hardrick had 84 yards receiving on six catches and the touchdown.

CNU led 17-3 in the second quarter. The Panthers answered with a quick 8-play 75-yard drive to cut the deficit. Craig's touchdown throw to Hardrick capped the drive with 2:39 left in the half.

The defense got the ball back when Nick Raszeja stripped the ball and Scott Chewning recovered for the Panthers at the Captains' 23-yard line.

The Panthers converted the turnover into points when Will Jeffcoat connected on a 31-yard field goal on the final play of the half to make it 17-13. Jeffcoat made a season-long 42-yard kick for the Panthers' first points of the game.

The Panthers took the second half kickoff and drove 74 yards to take their first lead of the game. Craig had completions of 41 yards to Michael Gray and 28 yards to Oge to get to the CNU 15. Three plays later, Seqouh Humes ran it in from the 8 for a 20-17 lead.

The Captains came back with three straight scoring drives to build a 38-20 lead.

The Panthers got within 12 in the fourth quarter. Humes scored from the 1 for his second touchdown to make it 38-26. The Captains finished the scoring with a late touchdown for the 45-26 final.

The Panthers are off next Saturday. They host Ferrum on Nov. 15 for Senior Day.
