Box Score Visiting N.C. Wesleyan downed LaGrange 48-21 on Saturday in a USA South game at Callaway Stadium. The loss left the Panthers 3-3 overall and 1-3 in conference play.
Sophomore Shelby Wilkes, subbing for an injured Graham Craig, threw for 212 yards and two touchdowns. Senior Isaac Dixon had a 7-yard touchdown run.
N.C. Wesleyan (4-2, 3-1 USA South) quarterback Dustin Midgett accounted for all of the Bishops' touchdowns. He threw for 193 yards and six touchdowns, then capped the scoring with a 19-yard touchdown run in the fourth quarter.
The Panthers took a 7-0 lead in the first quarter after a methodical 10-play 71 yard drive. Wilkes found Dixon for 17 yards to the Bishops' 16, then found Kory Schick in the corner of the end zone on the next play for the touchdown.
Midgett threw his first touchdown pass on the final play of the first quarter to tie the game 7-7. After a short punt gave the Bishops' good field position, Midgett's 12-yard toss made it 14-7.
The Panther took advantage of good field position to tie the game. Dixon bulled in from the 7 to finish the short 46-yard drive to make it 14-14.
The Bishops added a touchdown before the half and scored on their first possession of the second half to go up 27-14.
The Panther defense set up the offense at the Bishops' 12-yard line after T.J. Bullock's first interception of the season. On a fourth and 1 at the 3-yard line, Wilkes found Untorrey Thomas in the back of the end zone to cut the Bishops' lead to 27-21.
But Wesleyan answered with an 11-play 65-yard drive to lead 34-21 at the end of the third quarter. The Bishops would tack on two more scores in the fourth quarter for the 48-21 final.
Freshman Jake Dean led the Panther defense with nine tackles.
The Panthers host Methodist in a USA South game next Saturday for Homecoming 2014.
