Football: Huntingdon rolls past Panthers 62-17

Huntingdon scored on eight straight possessions in rolling past LaGrange 62-17 at Callaway Stadium on Saturday. The loss dropped the Panthers to 0-3 on the season, while the Hawk upped their record to 2-1.

Huntingdon had 602 yards of total offense; 343 coming in the air. The Panthers ran for 308 yards and finished with 414 total yards. The 308 yards on the ground was the fourth most in a game by the Panthers.

Ed Russ broke his own rushing record for a quarterback with a game-high 148 yards on 13 carries; including a 57-yard touchdown. The total was the fifth most in a game overall by a Panther.

Kent Gibson set a school-record with 290 all-purpose yards. He also set school records with eight kick returns and 193 kickoff return yards. Gibson also rushed for 97 yards in the game.

The Panthers opened the scoring in the first quarter with a school-record 44-yard field goal by Will Jeffcoat. Jeffcoat broke Josh Stripling's mark of 42 yards set in 2007 and again in 2008.

Huntingdon came back on a 63-yard by Trevor Manuel to take a 7-3 lead. Manuel had 105 yards on 10 carries and three touchdowns.He also had a 43-yard touchdown reception.

The Panthers answered with a 13-play 68-yard drive taking almost seven minutes to retake the lead. Russ capped the drive with a short 4-yard pass to Marquius Young to make it 10-7 at the end of the first quarter.

The Hawks scored on their last four possessions of the first half and their first four of the second half to roll to a 55-10 lead. Quarterback Neil Posey, who was 14-for-17 and all of the Hawks' 343 passing yards, three touchdown passes of 58, 43 and 22 yards.

The Panthers closed out the scoring with a 1-play drive. Russ went up the middle on a keeper and outran the secondary for 57 yards for the 62-17 final.

The 62 points were the most given up in a game by the Panthers. It eclipsed the 58 points scored by Bridgewater in 2006.

The Panthers are off next week before hosting N.C. Wesleyan on Sept. 29 in their first USA South game.
