Football: Greensboro downs Panthers with late touchdown

GREENSBORO, N.C. - Greensboro scored with 17 seconds left to down LaGrange 31-27 on Saturday. The Panthers finished the season 3-7 overall and 3-4 in the USA South.

Quarterback Ryan Throndset and wide receiver Antwan Thorpe led Greensboro (5-5, 3-4 USA South). Throndset threw for a record 598 yards and four touchdowns, three to Thorpe who had 391 yards receiving on 22 catches.

Will Jeffcoat had given the Panthers a 27-25 lead with 49 seconds left with a 35-yard field goal. Throndset and Thorpe moved the Pride 72 yards in just five plays for the winning score.

The duo accounted for all the yards on the drive. Throndset threw 30 yards to Thorpe to the Panthers' 29. Three plays later, Thorpe gathered in Throndset's pass from 13 yards out for the game winner.

After a scoreless first quarter, the two teams combined for five touchdowns in the second quarter. The Panthers came out of the quarter with a 21-13 lead.

Kent Gibsonfinished a nine-play 58-yard drive with a 1-yard run for the first score of the game. Throndset answered with his first touchdown pass of the game to tie it at 7-7.

The Panthers needed only four plays to take a 14-7 lead. Gibson ran for 18 yards down to the Pride 31. After Ed Russ passed 16 yards to Aaron Duncan, Gibson covered the final 15 yards on the next play for his second touchdown.

Throndset came back with a 65-yard touchdown throw to Thorpe to pull the Pride within one, 14-13. Once again, the Panthers came down the field to score.

Russ threw 24 yards to John John Hill to the Greensboro 26. After Gibson gained 12 yards on two runs, Russ scored from the 14 to put the Panthers up 21-13 with under three minutes remaining in the half.

Greensboro threatened on its final drive of the half. Throndset passed the The Pride down to the Panthers' 5-yard line. Andre Carter ended the threat by intercepting Throndset on fourth down to preserve the eight-point lead.

Walter Scott's 10-yard run pulled Greensboro within two, 21-19, in the third quarter. Jeffcoat hit from 27-yards as the Panthers led 24-19 heading to the fourth quarter.

Greensboro took its first lead of the game after Russ was intercepted for the Panthers' only turnover of the game. Throndset's 11-yard pass to Thorpe put the Pride up 25-24.

The Panthers got the ball back with less than two minutes after stopping the Pride on downs at their own 48.

Russ got the Panthers down to the Greensboro 23 after completions to Duncan and Cody Darracott. Jeffcoat came on and put the Panthers back in the lead, 27-25, with 49 seconds left.

But Throndset brought Greeensboro down the field in only 32 seconds for the winning touchdown.

Gibson had a game-high 82 yards rushing and 165 all-purpose yards in his final game. Russ finished the game with a season-high 200 yards passing.
